Fantasy Premier League: Three essential FPL tips ahead of GW6
Man City attack is worth investing in – but buyer beware
For years now Manchester City have been a maddening club when it comes to FPL. They are almost perpetually the best team in the Premier League, yet it’s been nigh-on impossible to nail any of their players down as fantasy assets.
That is almost exclusively down to Pep Guardiola’s penchant for rotation, but we finally got someone we could rely on every week in the form of Erling Haaland. However, practically every FPL manager has him in their team, so it’s almost irrelevant what he scores in any given gameweek.
After five games Man City boast the most shots (97), shots in the box (69), big chances (19) and expected goals (12.93xG), according to Opta. Being able to call upon another on of their attackers could provide an edge to your team. The problem is finding the right one.
Phil Foden (£7.6m) seemed poised for that mantle after an impressive start to the new campaign in which he was playing predominantly as a no.10. Lately, however, he has been playing more on the right and hasn’t been as involved in the penalty area. He’s still a hold for me, but I wouldn’t be jumping on him right now.
Jeremy Doku (£6.5m) impressed in his second appearance since joining the club, scoring against West Ham and generally looking very dangerous. He could turn out to be a great asset at a phenomenal price, but it’s too early to tell whether or not he’s a dependable asset.
That leaves us with Julian Alvarez (£6.8m), who has enjoyed a terrific start to the season. Indeed, the Argentine is only eight points behind Haaland’s tally so far!
The glaring issue with Alvarez is that he has provided five assists from just 1.42 expected assists (xA). That is a level of overperformance that surely cannot continue. On top of that, he’s scored twice from 1.93xG, which doesn’t exactly scream elite marksman.
That said, the forward seems to have nailed down a starting spot, is coming off the back of a two-goal salvo in the Champions League, and has created 16 chances – the most of any City player this term.

Time to go in on Newcastle defence?
Newcastle United have had a pretty awful start to the Premier League this season, serving up some uninspiring football as they lost three games on the bounce in between wins over Aston Villa and Brentford.
The Magpies have had a tough schedule up to now, but it’s the performances that have turned everybody off their assets. That should probably change soon.
Starting in GW6, Newcastle have a really nice run of fixtures that begins with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, followed by Burnley at home, West Ham on the road, Crystal Palace at St James’ Park and Wolves away. Their next really tough game isn’t until November when they host Arsenal.
With that in mind, now could be the ideal time to jump on the Newcastle defence, which has conceded the second-fewest big chances (6) in the Premier League despite facing Villa, Liverpool, Man City, Brighton and Brentford already.
Kieran Trippier (£6.5m) is already owned by nearly a third of FPL managers, and adds attacking threat with the possibility of clean sheet points. Sven Botman (£4.5m) offers a much cheaper alternative though, and he has started every match for which he has been available.
Given their commitments in the Champions League there is a possibility of being bitten by rotation. But it’s worth the risk.

Is it time to take this Palace forward seriously?
Odsonne Edouard (£5.6m) has enjoyed a fine start to the season, netting four goals in five starts. The Crystal Palace striker has never scored more than six times in a single Premier League campaign, but he looks set to finally show what he’s made of this time around.
The Frenchman is slightly over performing his 3.1xG, but there are signs he is becoming a genuinely potent attacking threat. One Haaland (20) has taken more than his 19 shots in the box, while only three players have had more than his five big chances so far this season.
In GW6 Palace host Fulham, who have conceded more big chances (20) than any other side. That’s followed up by Manchester United away, and if recent history is anything to go by Old Trafford is far from a fortress.
At his price point Edouard could be an ideal replacement for Joao Pedro or just a really handy enabler who will chip in with the odd return.
