Braintree League: Team-Mates Help Rayne Stay Grounded

After achieving an impressive record of nine victories and a single draw in their first ten matches, Rayne E has faced their inaugural loss in the highly competitive Division Two of the Braintree Table Tennis League. This unexpected defeat came at the hands of their own D team, whom they recently overtook to claim the second position in the standings. This result leaves only two teams still undefeated in the league: Netts A in Division One and Finchingfield A in Division Three, highlighting the competitive nature of the league.

Matthew Brown once again showcased his talent by securing three singles victories; however, his teammates struggled to match his performance. Adi Kamma, Dave Moles, and Paul Wellington each contributed two wins, collectively leading the D team to a narrow 6-4 victory over their E team counterparts. This match demonstrated the depth of talent within the league and the fierce rivalries that exist between the teams.

The E team’s sole additional victory came in the doubles match, where Brown partnered with Dave Allinson, providing some much-needed consolation for Allinson after he lost his remarkable streak of winning in every other singles match he had participated in. Their teamwork in the doubles highlighted the importance of collaboration and strategy in achieving success in table tennis.

Despite the loss, Rayne E clings to second place in the standings; however, they have fallen further behind the league leaders, Sudbury Wanderers, who triumphed over Rayne’s F team with an impressive 8-2 scoreline. Ian Shrubsole and Natalie Dodd remained unbeaten, showcasing their strong form and contributing significantly to their team’s success.

In contrast, emotions ran high at the other end of the standings, where Netts D celebrated their first win of the season. Jack Dearsley made a significant impact in his debut appearance and put forth an excellent performance, winning all three of his singles matches. Alongside Jimmy Calisin, Dearsley also secured victory in the doubles, leading his team to a noteworthy 7-3 triumph over Black Notley F.

The top teams in Division Three experienced comfortable wins as well. Finchingfield A demonstrated their dominance by defeating their own B team 8-2, while Sudbury Strollers achieved an impressive 9-1 victory over Rayne G. These results emphasize the competitive spirit and skill level present in the league.

The Finchingfield derby featured an exciting showdown between Ray Bradford and his son Lucien, marking the first clash between the two. In a thrilling match, it was the 16-year-old Lucien who emerged victorious with scores of 11-4, 11-6, and 11-8, showcasing the rising talent within the league.

Youthful talent was also on display in Netts F’s commanding 7-3 victory over Notley H, where 13-year-old Tom Verrier and 16-year-old JJ Calisin won all seven sets between them. This impressive feat is especially noteworthy considering Notley H’s seasoned player, Nigel Parmenter, began the evening with an outstanding record of 17 wins out of 21 matches.

Netts’ E team also secured a solid 7-3 win against Rayne H, climbing up the table as a result. Ray Carter made only his second appearance this season and contributed significantly by winning three singles matches. Additionally, Steve Willis’s impressive performance, with three wins of his own, helped Yeldham Whitlocks B to a strong 7-3 victory over Notley I.
