The Los Angeles Angels have successfully sidestepped arbitration with their talented left-handed reliever, Brock Burke, securing a one-year contract valued at $1.15 million, according to reports from Robert Murray of FanSided. This deal comes in slightly below the projected $1.2 million estimation by MLB Trade Rumors contributor Matt Swartz, showcasing the team’s strategic financial planning.
Burke, a 28-year-old pitcher, was acquired by the Angels off waivers from the Texas Rangers in August. After joining the Angels, he showcased impressive performance metrics, achieving a 3.54 ERA while striking out over 30% of hitters during his tenure, which spanned 20 1/3 innings. This marks a significant turnaround for Burke, who struggled earlier in the season with the Rangers, yielding over a run per inning across 13 appearances.
Despite his rocky start to the season, which left him with a less-than-ideal 5.82 earned run average, Burke demonstrated enough skill and resilience in his six-week stint with the Angels to earn another chance. He has emerged as a critical asset in the bullpen, potentially leading the left-handed contingent alongside José Quijada and possibly Rule 5 selection Garrett McDaniels. Burke will be eligible for arbitration again next offseason, which could set the stage for further negotiations based on his performance.
