Exciting Developments for Broncos Country: Kickoff of OTAs!
As the OTAs commence today, fervent discussions abound regarding the various challenges and opportunities facing this young Broncos squad. Over the next three months, we will delve into these topics extensively, analyzing every aspect leading up to the official start of the games. The anticipation is palpable, as fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this roster evolves and who steps up to make a significant impact on the field.
In the meantime, let’s explore some of the most intriguing questions surrounding the team this offseason.
Assessing the Running Back Rankings: Who Stands Out?
Before the draft, the Broncos had a formidable trio of running backs: Javonte Williams, Samaje Perine, and Jaleel McLaughlin. These players each brought unique skills and strengths to the field.
With the recent addition of former Notre Dame standout Audric Estimé in the fifth round, alongside undrafted rookie Blake Watson from Memphis, head coach Sean Payton now faces the crucial task of determining which combination of these running backs will solidify the roster. This decision could significantly influence the team’s offensive strategy and effectiveness going forward.
“All these guys, they’re all competing for different roles, spots, roster,” Payton remarked during the rookie minicamp, emphasizing the importance of observing how each player meshes with the others to piece together the ideal running back dynamic. “I want to see it, and then we’ll go by what we see…who knows what we’re going to get? They are two different players…two different types of runners, but we’ll see where it goes.”
Sean Payton has a prepare for Audric Estime. He discusses his lawns after contact which I highlighted in the pre-draft procedure as second finest YOC of 2024 class.

The Impact of Courtland Sutton’s Contract Negotiation on the Team
The Broncos’ standout wide receiver for 2023, Courtland Sutton, is currently absent from OTAs as he seeks a new contract. His status raises critical questions about his future with the team.
Last season, Sutton emerged as the offense’s most reliable playmaker, registering impressive stats with 59 receptions for 772 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 37 first downs. However, beyond the numbers, fans will remember his clutch touchdown catches, particularly during pivotal moments like the game against the Bills.
Despite his talent, Sutton has struggled with consistency throughout his career. Following a breakout sophomore season, he faced significant challenges due to injuries, missing nearly an entire season. In the subsequent two years, while he remained part of the offense, his production dipped, with only two touchdown receptions each year.
The debate surrounding Sutton’s demands for a higher salary is complex, with valid arguments on both sides of the discussion.
However, what remains clear is the potential impact of his absence on the offense’s overall performance and the developing chemistry with the new, young quarterbacks.
Sutton’s experience could be invaluable, particularly for quarterbacks Bo Nix and Zach Wilson. His rapport with all three quarterbacks may prove crucial for a successful start to the season, especially as Broncos Country anticipates a strong performance from the QB room when Week 1 arrives.
Determining the Starting Quarterback: Who Will Lead the Broncos?
This question stands as the most pressing concern of the offseason and will undoubtedly be the focal point as training camp approaches in August.
First-round draft pick Bo Nix has garnered considerable media attention recently, but whether this translates into him being named the Week 1 starter remains uncertain.
To solidify his position, Nix must demonstrate his abilities on the field.
Currently, he is listed third on the depth chart, trailing behind Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson.
Stidham, who served as the Broncos’ backup in 2023 and started the final two games after Russell Wilson was benched, is now in a fierce battle to retain his backup position. The dynamics of whether Stidham will be behind Nix or the newly acquired and often scrutinized Zach Wilson remain to be seen.
Much of the responsibility will fall on Payton to develop both Nix and, to a lesser extent, Wilson into the franchise quarterback that fans and the organization are hoping for.
Evaluating the Defense: Strengths and Challenges Ahead
In my view, the most significant question heading into the 2024 season revolves not around the offense, but rather the defense’s capabilities.
While the offense is young and may face struggles, there is hope that they will find a rhythm under Payton’s guidance.
However, the defense will be without one of its key leaders and consistent performers, Justin Simmons. The absence of Simmons and Josey Jewell, both of whom were critical communicators last season, raises concerns about the defense’s ability to function cohesively.
This situation could lead to a rocky start for the defensive unit, especially in the early weeks of the season. Remember the communication breakdowns that occurred in Miami when Simmons was sidelined?
That’s a situation that the Broncos must avoid repeating.
They aren’t stopping: Mike White simply tossed a 68-yard TD to Robbie Chosen. FOR REAL.
The Dolphins are simply offering it to the Broncos.

Ultimately, the defense must improve, especially with the recent addition of Jonathan Franklin-Meyers, who joined the squad via a trade with the Jets. There is hope that players like Caden Sterns and P.J. Locke III can remain healthy and fulfill the potential they’ve shown in the secondary.
However, the defense faces challenges with a largely untested group of defensive backs, compounded by the departures of Simmons and Jewell, alongside a youthful edge rusher unit that recently lost Drew Sanders to an Achilles injury. The defense will require substantial time to gel and develop cohesion before the season commences in September.
