Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens NHL Rumors Update

Calgary Flames Prioritizing Young Talent with Possible PTO Signings

Eric Francis: Calgary Flames General Manager Craig Conroy has announced a strategic focus on developing young talent during the preseason. He emphasizes the importance of providing ample ice time for promising players to showcase their skills. While the primary objective is to nurture these young athletes, Conroy has not dismissed the idea of acquiring a player on a Professional Tryout (PTO) agreement. This approach reflects the team’s commitment to building a competitive roster while considering opportunities for experienced players who may enhance the team’s capabilities.

Mikael Backlund Discusses His Contract Situation as Season Approaches

Wes Gilbertson: As Calgary Flames forward Mikael Backlund enters the final year of his contract, he shares his thoughts on the situation: “Just like I said at the end of last season, I kind of wanted to see what was going to happen here and I’m still feeling that way … I haven’t closed any doors. I’m excited to start the season and we’ll see how things shake out.” Backlund’s openness to possibilities highlights his commitment to the Flames while remaining adaptable to changes that may arise over the course of the season.

NHL Rumors: A Surprising Calm in Calgary That Wasn’t Expected

Noah Hanifin Trade Possibilities Prior to NHL Season Beginning

The Fourth Period: With six defensemen poised to become free agents after this season, the Calgary Flames face critical decisions regarding their roster. Notably, Noah Hanifin has indicated he does not intend to sign an extension, raising questions about his future with the team. At just 26 years old, Hanifin carries a significant $4.95 million cap hit and has an eight-team no-trade clause. Despite this, the Flames are focused on winning and are hesitant to trade Hanifin for future assets. Teams like the Nashville Predators have shown interest in acquiring a defenseman, but details on negotiations remain unclear. As training camp progresses and teams assess their needs, the demand for a top-four defenseman could lead to further inquiries to the Flames.

Potential Montreal Canadiens Trade Targets Before the Deadline

Chris Galanopoulos of The Hockey News: As the NHL season unfolds, several Montreal Canadiens players may find themselves on the trading block before the deadline. The Canadiens currently have three goaltenders under contract—Casey DeSmith, Jake Allen, and Samuel Montembeault. With DeSmith carrying a $1.8 million cap hit, he could become expendable, especially if other teams face goaltending injuries during training camp. Additionally, Sean Monahan (one year remaining at $1.985 million) and Christian Dvorak might be traded to create space for younger talents. Last season, teams expressed interest in Josh Anderson, but the offers were insufficient, as GM Kent Hughes indicated. Anderson remains under contract through 2026-27. Joel Armia, with a contract lasting until 2024-25 at $3.4 million, may also require incentives to facilitate a trade. Furthermore, prospects Justin Barron and Jesse Ylonen could be utilized in more significant trade deals as the Canadiens look to reshape their roster.
