Reflecting on the Coaching Strategies of Romeo Crennel

While it may seem unexpected, I find myself thinking about Romeo Crennel during this time. To provide some context, Crennel served as the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator in 2010 under then-head coach Todd Haley. After Haley’s departure during the tumultuous 2011 season, Crennel stepped in as the interim head coach and eventually secured the position full-time for the 2012 season.

Unfortunately, the outcome was less than favorable, to put it mildly.

The Chiefs started the 2012 season poorly, prompting Crennel to put a sign in the locker room that read, “ELIMINATE BAD FOOTBALL.”

Despite this motivational message, it proved ineffective. The Chiefs lost five of their first six games, leading to a revised sign stating, “PLAY GOOD FOOTBALL.”

As we all know, that approach didn’t yield much success either. It was a disappointing season, but it ultimately paved the way for the hiring of Andy Reid.

It may sound surprising, but perhaps it’s time for Reid to take a cue from Crennel’s strategy and focus on “ELIMINATING BAD FOOTBALL.”

The concept is straightforward. Often, teams lose games due to self-inflicted mistakes, including penalties, turnovers, defensive lapses, and situational miscalculations. Recent examples abound throughout the NFL, notably with teams like the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders.

While the Chiefs aren’t in dire straits, their mistakes haven’t consistently cost them wins. However, it’s crucial for this team to start identifying its identity as the calendar shifts to January, beginning with the imperative to eliminate poor football.
