This past offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs made strategic moves to significantly improve their pass receiving corps. They signed free agent Hollywood Brown and invested a first-round draft pick on Texas standout Xavier Worthy. These decisions were part of a broader strategy to enhance the offensive capabilities of the team.

Unfortunately, the Chiefs will start their season opener without Brown, who suffered a sternoclavicular injury during Preseason Week 1. His recovery timeline indicates that he may return by Week 2 or Week 3, leaving the team to adapt quickly to his absence.

Initially, the Chiefs structured their offense with the expectation that Brown would be ready for the season. However, as training camp progressed, the coaching staff had to shift their strategy, adapting to the evolving situation and ensuring the team remained competitive.

“You have to adjust a little bit,” said quarterback Patrick Mahomes during a press conference. “Even though he’s such an important part of our offense, we have to find ways to fill that gap. He brings versatility, capable of playing multiple positions. Fortunately, Coach [Andy] Reid and [Brett] Veach have cultivated a competitive environment, allowing other players to step up and take on some of his responsibilities.”

“It’s not just going to be one player replacing him. We’ll rely on multiple guys to step in and contribute this week, and we’re hopeful to have him back next week,” Mahomes added, underscoring the collaborative effort required in Brown’s absence.

At the beginning of training camp, the anticipated starting trio of receivers in the Chiefs’ 11-personnel package included Brown, Worthy, and Rashee Rice. With Brown sidelined, Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy quickly mentioned Justin Watson as the next man up, reflecting his confidence in Watson’s abilities and past performance.

Watson joined the Chiefs before the 2022 season and has since proven to be a reliable asset. As the coaching staff became more familiar with his skills, they recognized his potential to make significant contributions to the team.

“Justin’s always been a big part of it — quietly,” said Reid at the podium on Sunday. “He may not be in the spotlight often, but he plays a crucial role in our operations. His work ethic and intelligence make him a valuable asset. Even when Hollywood returns, Watson will remain an integral part of our offensive strategy, consistently demonstrating his commitment and skill during practices and games.”

In addition to Watson, Mecole Hardman and Skyy Moore may see some playing time, although their contributions are expected to be more significant on special teams. Both players were listed as return specialists on Kansas City’s initial 53-player depth chart, indicating their versatility and importance to the team.

Special teams coordinator Dave Toub entered camp with the hope that Worthy would emerge as the starting punt returner. However, with Brown unavailable, Hardman is now likely to take on that role. Additionally, both Moore and fullback Carson Steele are expected to serve as kick returners, adding depth to the special teams unit.

Worthy is anticipated to make his season debut with an exclusive focus on making a positive offensive impact, aiming to capitalize on the opportunities presented by Brown’s injury.

“[Worthy] spends a lot of time with Pat and the other veteran receivers to understand their expectations,” Reid noted regarding Worthy on Monday. “He’s proactive, asking questions and eager to learn. He’s been experimenting with various routes, whether inside, intermediate, or deep. I like his approach. As with any rookie, the true test comes during games, but I believe he’ll perform well.”

In the locker room on Sunday, Worthy exuded confidence, prepared for his moment in the spotlight.

“I feel like I’ve gotten comfortable with the system and its nuances, understanding the reasoning behind our plays,” Worthy stated. “I just feel ready for this opportunity.”

To further address any uncertainty in the wide receiver position, Kansas City decided to welcome back a familiar face: JuJu Smith-Schuster. After dealing with knee issues in previous seasons, the Chiefs report that he is now healthy and has positively impacted Mahomes and the team.

“It’s super exciting to have Smith-Schuster back,” Mahomes expressed on Sunday. “He brings a unique energy to the locker room and practice field. He understands what it means to be a professional and works hard. He looks great out there.”

“I’m thrilled for him as he continues to grasp the nuances we’ve changed since his last season with us in 2023. He’s adapted quickly, and having someone of his caliber in our receiver room is incredibly beneficial.”

While the Chiefs are eager for Brown to return and play against his former team on Thursday night, the atmosphere surrounding the team has developed a sense of confidence, showcasing their readiness to tackle challenges head-on without him.
