When L.A.B. Golf unveiled the OZ.1i mallet in December, it created significant buzz in the golfing community. This putter, developed in collaboration with renowned golfer Adam Scott, was notable for being the first L.A.B. Golf putter equipped with a stainless steel face insert, elevating its performance and appeal.
The OZ.1i also introduced a groundbreaking zero-degree shaft lean option, a departure from the forward press found in previous L.A.B. Golf putters. This design modification allows golfers to use any grip style, making the putter feel more familiar and comfortable for those who prefer traditional mallet designs.
Importantly, the OZ.1i maintains its Lie Angle Balance feature, ensuring exceptional stability and performance regardless of the face and shaft configurations chosen.
L.A.B. Golf had previously hinted at the introduction of an insert-free version of the OZ.1, and now that time has come. The OZ.1, featuring a robust all-aluminum face, is officially available for purchase.
As an avid golfer, I couldn’t resist trying out this latest model from L.A.B. Golf. I have plenty of insights to share, starting with an exploration of the custom build programs available for both the OZ.1i and the OZ.1. Let’s see if the reality matches what we envisioned on-screen.
Next, I’ll address a common question many have regarding these two models: How does the type of face influence performance on the green?
Exploring Custom Build Options for the OZ.1i and OZ.1 Putters

As a golf enthusiast, one of my favorite activities is engaging in the process of online golf club building. I find great satisfaction in experimenting with various configurations and options available through the computer interfaces.
Each design adjustment sparks my imagination as I consider how different build options might enhance my putting performance. Admittedly, part of my excitement comes from trying out unique options that give the putter a visually appealing look.
The most satisfying part of this experience isn’t just the anticipation while waiting for the package to arrive, but the thrill of unboxing it. There’s nothing quite like revealing whether the actual putter matches the design I crafted online.
Based on my personal experiences, L.A.B. Golf has an impeccable track record when it comes to custom builds. I’ve ordered five custom L.A.B. putters, and each one has exceeded my expectations based on the computer renderings.
With such high expectations set, I eagerly submitted my custom builds for both the L.A.B. Golf OZ.1i and OZ.1.
Discovering Customization Options for L.A.B. Golf OZ Putters
Choosing to go custom with your putter typically starts at a minimum investment of $100. If you decide to add a customized shaft, the price will increase accordingly. Given that the standard putter already retails for $499, the additional cost makes a custom L.A.B. Golf putter pricier than many options available in local golf shops.
Is this investment worthwhile?
In short, absolutely! The extra expense grants you access to a wide array of customization options, allowing you to tailor your putter to your unique preferences and playing style:
- Choose your dexterity (right or left)
- Select from 8 vibrant head color options
- Opt for different head weights (standard, heavier, lighter)
- Decide on your putting style (standard or counterbalanced)
- Customize length (28″-36″ for standard builds)
- Adjust the lie angle (63°-79.5°)
- Select shaft lean (0° or 2°)
- Choose from 7 Press Grip options
- Pick alignment schemes (31 front and 21 rear alignment graphics)
- Choose your putter shaft (options include steel, ACCRA, GEARS, or TPT)
This additional investment of $100 allows you to build the perfect L.A.B. putter that not only appeals to your visual preferences but also meets your specific playing requirements.
Introducing the New GEARS x L.A.B. Golf Shaft Option

In addition to introducing a new face design, both the OZ.1 and OZ.1i also feature an exciting new shaft option: the L.A.B. GEARS putter shaft. L.A.B. Golf advocates for using a very stiff shaft in putters to minimize any potential influence of shaft flex on your putting stroke.
However, they also recognize that an overly stiff putter shaft can feel harsh and diminish the feedback you receive during your stroke.
To address this, L.A.B. Golf has collaborated with shaft manufacturers to create graphite shafts with varying stiffness levels. While all the shafts are designed to be stiff, their stiffness varies from one to another.
The new GEARS x L.A.B. Golf shaft offers a balanced stiffness level that is not as stiff as the firmest TPT shaft, yet stiffer than the ACCRA option. It truly is the “Goldilocks” option for those seeking the right feel.
When customizing your putter, upgrading the shaft is typically the most expensive option. Ideally, you should seek out a fitter who has access to the various shafts for testing purposes. If that’s not feasible, L.A.B. provides a comprehensive explanation of their shafts in the L.A.B. 101 section of their website.
Dave’s Custom Builds for the OZ.1i and OZ.1 Putters

For my latest putter designs, I opted for a more conservative approach. Well, that’s only partially true.
For the OZ.1i, I selected a cappuccino brown finish along with the new black GEARS shaft. Although I’m a big fan of the ACCRA shaft, I was eager to experience the performance of the new shaft, especially considering my stock OZ.1i is fitted with a TPT shaft.
On the other hand, I took a bolder approach with my L.A.B. Golf OZ.1 build. Yes, it’s bright pink. I sometimes get easily distracted by visually striking designs. The white version of the GEARS shaft seemed like a fitting complement to this vibrant aesthetic.
This eye-catching design would make for an excellent Valentine’s Day gift!
Aside from the color choices, all other specifications for both putters were kept consistent. By reducing the number of variables, I aimed to better understand how the stainless steel insert of the OZ.1i affected ball roll compared to the all-aluminum face of the new OZ.1.
L.A.B. Golf’s Impressive Streak Continues

L.A.B. Golf’s streak of delivering products that surpass computer renderings continues. Both putters looked even more impressive in person than they did on-screen.
The cappuccino finish on the L.A.B. Golf OZ.1i was richer and deeper than I had anticipated. I expected a flatter brown, but in natural light, the finish displays a stunning vibrancy that truly shines.
Depending on the sunlight’s angle, I occasionally noticed the edge of the toe end screw hole when addressing the ball. This little detail was less noticeable with the black stock version. Since the OZ.1 has no insert, these holes are absent, further enhancing its sleek look.
