As the NFL regular season approaches its conclusion, exciting developments unfold for the Detroit Lions. According to ESPN’s Ben Baby, two standout players are on the verge of achieving lucrative contract bonuses that could significantly enhance their earnings.
Defensive end Za’Darius Smith is in pursuit of incentives tied to his contract, which the Lions acquired during a strategic trade for the pass rusher earlier this season. Reports indicate that if Smith secures just two more sacks in the remaining two games, bringing his total to 10.0 for the season, he will unlock a bonus worth $250,000. Moreover, if he can reach four additional sacks (totaling 12.0), he stands to gain an extra $500,000. Notably, if Smith achieves either of these targets, he will automatically receive an additional $250,000 due to the Lions clinching a playoff berth.
For quarterback Jared Goff, the path to his bonus is slightly more complex. As reported by Baby, Goff’s base salary for 2028 could increase by $1 million if the Lions triumph in the Super Bowl. Additionally, he must complete the season with at least 50% of the team’s offensive snaps, a milestone that appears highly likely given his current performance.
Last season, the Lions demonstrated their commitment to helping players reach their contract incentives. In a memorable moment during their 2023 season finale against the Minnesota Vikings, the team strategically threw the ball to Josh Reynolds four consecutive times, allowing him to meet a receiving yards incentive that netted him an extra $250,000. This act showcased the Lions’ dedication to their players’ financial success.
Although it may prove more challenging for the Lions to craft similar opportunities for players to earn bonuses this year, fans still have plenty of reasons to cheer. Whether it’s rooting for a critical sack from Za’Darius Smith or rallying for the Lions to secure a Super Bowl victory, there’s an added incentive for the team and its supporters this season.
