Daniel Jones Confident He’s Among NFL’s Top Quarterbacks

Minnesota Vikings News and Links, 12 March 2024

Daniel Jones of the New York Giants confidently asserts his position among the elite quarterbacks in the NFL, despite the recent Madden Ratings omitting him from the top 32 players in that category. While many analysts may disagree, Jones maintains a strong belief in his capabilities and potential as a quarterback in the league.

In a candid conversation with Tyler Dunne from the esteemed platform Go Long, Jones expressed his unwavering confidence during a recent one-on-one interview at Giants training camp. His statements reveal not only his self-assurance but also a commitment to demonstrating his skills on the field this upcoming season.

“I’ve done it, and I’ve played at a really high level and I understand I need to play consistently at that level, but I think we got the guys and we’ve got the makeup of the team for us all to play at a really high level, including me,” Jones told Dunne. “I know I can.”

Jones has a clear understanding of the Giants’ quarterback dynamics and has openly discussed his situation with General Manager Joe Schoen. He is well aware of the team’s seriousness about potentially selecting a quarterback during the draft, which was highlighted by their willingness to trade up to the No. 3 pick for a player like Drake Maye, had the opportunity arisen in negotiations with the New England Patriots.

“It ticks you off a little bit to see,” Jones shared with Dunne. “It’s not fun and not something that you’re excited about. Like I said, it is what it is at this point and it’s my job to play well regardless.”

This spring and summer, Jones has exhibited a newfound intensity and determination as a quarterback that may not have been as prevalent in previous seasons. His demeanor suggests he is approaching the game with a fresh perspective and a heightened sense of urgency to prove himself as a top-tier player.

“I’m very motivated by this and by being as good a player as I can be,” Jones stated. “Definitely didn’t enjoy watching that and it was a tough situation in a lot of ways, but that’s the reality of the NFL. My job is to be on the field and play good football. So that’s something I’ve got to understand and it is what it is at this point. It’s about playing the game and playing well now.”

Jones articulated his desire to be an aggressive quarterback who is unafraid to take risks on the field. He emphasizes the importance of pushing the ball downfield to exploit the athleticism of his teammates, who have the capability to break free from defenders.

“Being able to push the ball down the field to our guys. We’ve got a number of guys who can get behind the defense,” Jones noted. “So being aggressive and taking shots when we’ve got ‘em, and then smart decision-making when it’s not there and an ability to extend plays and use my legs in the run game. All of that. Mostly, this position’s about decision-making and knowing when you’ve got it and knowing when you don’t, and then handling both those situations accordingly.”

As the upcoming season unfolds, all eyes will be on Jones and the Giants to see how his ambitions manifest on the field. If he performs well, as Schoen hinted during ‘Hard Knocks’, the quarterback has two years remaining on his contract, potentially solidifying his role with the team for the foreseeable future. Conversely, if the performance does not meet expectations, it may lead to a change at the quarterback position for the Giants in 2025.
