Defensive Tackles Kansas City Chiefs Should Consider in Draft

Trade Talk Heats Up as Dallas Cowboys Face Draft Season

When considering the Kansas City Chiefs at the onset of the offseason, the foremost concern was undoubtedly the need for bolstering their defensive line. However, the strategy has shifted significantly. Instead of seeking external reinforcements, General Manager Brett Veach made a strategic decision to retain key players, aiming for a triumphant pursuit of their third consecutive Lombardi Trophy.

The Chiefs successfully secured Chris Jones with an impressive five-year, $158.75 million deal and brought back defensive stalwarts like Derrick Nnadi, Mike Pennel, and Tershawn Wharton. Although Mike Danna primarily operates as an edge rusher, his versatility allows him to contribute inside as well. According to Pro Football Focus, Danna spent 173 snaps in 2023 as a defensive tackle. Consequently, while the immediate need for defensive tackle has lessened, the Chiefs could still benefit from adding a developmental player to enhance their future depth.

Both Pennel, Wharton, and Nnadi are currently on one-year contracts, while Jones has a three-year agreement that includes an option in 2027, which could save the team $65 million against the salary cap. This financial flexibility opens up opportunities for the Chiefs to consider various strategies regarding their defensive lineup.

With this context established, let’s explore three promising defensive tackle prospects that the Chiefs may target in the later rounds of the draft, specifically from pick 173 onward.

Standing at 6’2” and weighing 301 pounds, with 31 3/8-inch arms, the 23-year-old Tyler Davis may not fit the traditional mold for a defensive tackle in the NFL. Nevertheless, historical trends indicate that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is not averse to utilizing smaller players in interior positions, as evidenced by Tershawn Wharton‘s presence at just 6’1” and 280 pounds.

Davis excels at the point of attack, demonstrating an impressive ability to shed blockers and effectively utilize his powerful hands. Although he is not primarily known for pass rushing, he has shown potential in this area, achieving a double-digit pressure rate on quarterbacks in both 2021 (11%) and 2022 (12%). However, this figure dipped to just 5% in 2023, raising some concerns regarding his effectiveness in that regard.

In the accompanying video, you can observe his notable explosiveness off the snap. He demonstrates excellent body positioning and leverage, skillfully setting up blockers before employing a rip move to maneuver around their outside shoulder.

Davis’ strongest attribute lies in his run defense, where he effectively utilizes his compact strength to maintain his position and fend off offensive linemen before shedding blocks and attacking the ball carrier laterally. For a late-round prospect with slightly unconventional measurements, there is much to appreciate about his overall skill set.
