The New York Giants are experiencing a significant challenge at the quarterback position, which may lead to another change before the conclusion of this challenging season in just two weeks. As the team navigates through a series of setbacks, the need for stability in leadership becomes increasingly critical.
During a press conference on Monday, head coach Brian Daboll informed reporters that Drew Lock, who faced the Atlanta Falcons in a tough 34-7 defeat over the weekend, is set to undergo an MRI to evaluate his injured throwing shoulder. This injury was sustained during the game, adding to the team’s ongoing struggles.
“It’s his right shoulder,” Daboll stated. “Again, it could be nothing. They just gave it to me before I came down here. We’ll see where it’s at.” The uncertainty surrounding Lock’s health raises questions about the quarterback situation moving forward for the Giants.
Lock and Tommy DeVito have been sharing quarterback duties for the past five weeks following the release of Daniel Jones, who started the first 10 games of the season. Unfortunately, the Giants have faced a losing streak, dropping all five games since this transition.
DeVito had the opportunity to start in the Giants’ Week 12 matchup against Tampa Bay, but he was sidelined for the following two games against Dallas and New Orleans due to a forearm injury. Lock stepped in as starter for those games, yet was unable to play against Baltimore last week due to issues with his elbow and heel.
In that game against Baltimore, DeVito started but unfortunately suffered a concussion at halftime, leading to Tim Boyle stepping in as his replacement. As the team prepares for their next matchup, the result of Lock’s MRI could determine whether DeVito returns to starting duties this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts at home.
Additionally, the team faced other injury concerns during their last game, with inside linebacker Micah McFadden leaving the field and being replaced by Ty Summers. This raises further questions about the team’s depth and resilience amid a challenging season.
“No update,” Daboll said when asked about McFadden’s status. “He’s getting looked at here a little bit later. But he had a burner. So, we’ll see where that’s at.” This uncertainty surrounding player health adds to the overall challenges the Giants face as they attempt to finish the season strong.
In addition to McFadden, Daboll mentioned two other players dealing with injuries. “(Tyrone) Tracy re-aggravated his ankle a little bit and so did (center) John Michael (Schmitz Jr.). That’s all I got so far,” he said, indicating the ongoing struggle with player health in this season.
This season has been particularly challenging for the Giants, who had 21 players on their injury report last week and currently have a staggering total of 17 players on injured reserve (IR). The team’s fans are left hoping for a brighter future as this tumultuous season draws to a close.
