Super Bowl LIX is fast approaching, and excitement is in the air.
The highly anticipated showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs has generated extensive discussion, but I have some final insights I feel compelled to share before the big game.
1 – Saquon Barkley: The Unstoppable Force for the Eagles
When analyzing the Chiefs’ run defense, it’s important to note their rankings:
- tied for 7th in yards allowed per attempt
- 9th in DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average)
- 10th according to Pro Football Focus grading
- 15th in EPA (Expected Points Added)
- 16th in success rate
While this isn’t a terrible run defense, the Eagles have faced tougher opponents throughout the season, showcasing their resilience against even the best.
Regardless of the Chiefs’ defensive capabilities, my confidence in Saquon Barkley remains unshaken. He is an elite player who can consistently break through defenses and create significant yardage. The Eagles should continue to utilize him heavily throughout the game, relentlessly pounding the rock.
Barkley has set a personal record with 36 carries in a single game, alongside three receptions, totaling 39 touches. While the Eagles may not need to reach those numbers, they should certainly consider it if the game demands it.
Leave everything on the field—this is the moment to shine.
2 – Jalen Carter: The Game-Wrecker the Eagles Need
The last time the Eagles faced the Saints in the Superdome during Week 3, they encountered a formidable offense. However, one player managed to completely dismantle their game plan: Jalen Carter.
Though the Saints’ offensive line suffered injuries early in the game and their quarterback Derek Carr struggled, Carter’s impact was undeniable. His potential to disrupt plays is unmatched, and if anyone can neutralize Patrick Mahomes, it’s him.
Carter needs to be a dominant presence on the field, effectively taking control of the game.
The Chiefs’ strategies to block Carter will be crucial to watch. Will they rely on Trey Smith to handle Carter one-on-one, allowing Creed Humphrey to assist on the other side? Or will the Eagles adjust and move Carter around for maximum impact?
No matter the scenario, for the Eagles to secure a victory, Carter must exhibit dominance reminiscent of Aaron Donald in his prime.
3 – Nick Sirianni’s Strategy: Learning from Past Super Bowl Experiences
To defeat Mahomes, teams cannot afford to play conservatively by opting for punts and field goals.
Sirianni’s bold decision to go for it on 4th-and-5 during the NFC Championship Game was pivotal for the Eagles’ success.
Their triumph in Super Bowl LII can be attributed to moments of strategic bravery, such as executing the Philly Special on fourth down and converting crucial plays in tight situations.
Conversely, the Eagles’ defeat in Super Bowl LVII was largely influenced by Sirianni’s decision to punt on 4th-and-3 from their own territory.
It’s imperative to take risks. Play to win, not merely to survive.
4 – Trusting Jalen Hurts: A Proven Big-Game Performer
Having witnessed Hurts excel in the NFC Championship Game and reflecting on his commendable performance in Super Bowl LVII, it’s clear he thrives in high-pressure situations.
Despite potential concerns regarding the passing game, particularly after a rocky 2024 season and Hurts’ tendency to hold onto the ball, I have faith in his ability to deliver when it matters most.
The spotlight never seems too bright for Hurts; he consistently rises to the occasion.
5 – Monitoring the Eagles’ Interior Offensive Line: A Vital Concern
Fortunately, both Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens participated fully in practice throughout the week, and they are listed without any game statuses on the final injury report. This is a positive sign for the Eagles.
However, lingering questions remain regarding their overall health. Are they truly at full strength? Can they withstand the grueling demands of the entire game? Will any physical limitations hinder their performance?
Moreover, while Mekhi Becton has demonstrated solid run-blocking skills, there are notable concerns regarding his pass protection. Facing off against Chris Jones poses significant challenges that could impact the Eagles’ offensive effectiveness.
6 – Understanding the Risks of Steve Spagnuolo’s Blitzing Strategy
Steve Spagnuolo is known for his aggressive blitzing tactics, and he often employs unexpected strategies. This aspect of his game is one that must be monitored closely.
However, the dialogue around Chiefs’ blitzing often only highlights its advantages. It’s crucial to recognize that this tactic can also expose significant vulnerabilities.
In their previous matchup, the Eagles and Chiefs, Jalen Hurts effectively took advantage of blitzing, executing successful downhill runs into areas vacated by defenders.
While Spagnuolo’s blitzing could present problems for the Eagles, it also creates potential opportunities for big plays that the Eagles can capitalize on.
7 – The Critical Importance of Nolan Smith’s Fast Start
The matchup between Nolan Smith and Jawaan Taylor is one to watch closely for the Eagles. Smith has been on fire, recording four sacks in three playoff games and amassing 10.5 sacks over his last 15 games. His impressive speed and agility could pose significant challenges for Taylor, who often seems hesitant against outside rushes.
If Smith can gain an early advantage against Taylor, he may rattle him, leading to more mistakes and opportunities for the Eagles’ defense.
8 – Jake Elliott: A Unique Concern for the Eagles
While I don’t fear Jake Elliott missing a critical kick during the final moments of the game, as clutch moments have never been a significant issue for him, there is another concern to consider.
My greater worry lies in the possibility of him missing an extra point during the game, which could prove to be pivotal in the later stages of the match.
9 – Trusting Vic Fangio: A Defensive Genius for the Eagles
Vic Fangio has undoubtedly earned our trust through the remarkable performance of the Eagles’ defense this season.
His 0-8 record against Mahomes may seem concerning, but it’s essential to remember that his defenses performed relatively well in those games. Moreover, this Eagles defense is significantly stronger than those he coached for the Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins.
10 – A Fitting Farewell for Brandon Graham: A Legend’s Last Game?
Before suffering a triceps injury, Brandon Graham was showcasing the skill set of a player who could easily return for another season in 2025.
However, while I would love for him to remain on the field indefinitely, it’s time for the Eagles to send him off with a Super Bowl victory, a fitting tribute to his illustrious career.
There would be no more honorable way to conclude BG’s journey than on the grandest stage of all.
11 – Dallas Goedert: The Potential Star Tight End of the Super Bowl
Dallas Goedert has been impressive throughout the playoffs, accumulating 18 targets that resulted in 15 receptions for 188 yards, averaging 12.5 yards per catch, along with one touchdown. He has also added two carries for 13 yards, totaling 201 yards from scrimmage.
The Eagles should continue to prioritize him in their offensive game plan, especially considering the Chiefs’ struggles against tight ends this season, allowing more yards to that position than any other team.
While stopping Travis Kelce is a daunting task, it’s worth noting that the Eagles have allowed the fewest yards to tight ends this season, showcasing their defensive prowess.
