Edge Rushers the Dolphins Might Target After Shaq Barrett’s Retirement

Justin Jefferson Deal Puts Pressure on Chiefs’ Rivals

The Miami Dolphins recently faced an unexpected challenge just days before the start of training camp when two-time Super Bowl champion linebacker Shaq Barrett announced his retirement. Barrett’s exit raises concerns for the team’s defense, particularly with linebackers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb currently on the Physically Unable to Perform List. Initially, Barrett was projected to play a crucial role after signing a one-year contract with the Dolphins back in March. This situation has created a pressing need for Miami to bolster their linebacker corps ahead of the upcoming season.

In response to the current roster challenges, the Dolphins selected Chop Robinson with the No. 21 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and also secured Mohamed Kamara in the fifth round. However, the team still requires additional depth and strength in the pass rush until Phillips and Chubb can return to full action. Here are three impactful players the Miami Dolphins might consider to enhance their pass-rushing capabilities as training camp approaches.

Explore the Potential of Carl Lawson as a Key Acquisition

Carl Lawson, who recorded an impressive seven sacks while playing for the New York Jets in 2022, found himself out of the regular rotation in the final year of his three-year contract that he signed back in 2020. This significant change in his status could present an opportunity for the Dolphins to capitalize on his talent and experience.

Originally drafted as a fourth-round selection by the Cincinnati Bengals, Lawson had previously visited the Dolphins prior to the draft. Although the Dolphins opted to bring in a pair of rookie draft picks to fill the position, revisiting the possibility of signing Lawson seems like a sensible move, especially considering Miami’s urgent need for experienced pass-rushing talent. His proven track record could provide the Dolphins with the stability they require in critical game situations.

At just 29 years old, Lawson boasts a career total of 27 quarterback sacks and has consistently recorded a minimum of five sacks in each of the four seasons where he played at least 12 games. This level of production makes him an appealing target for a team looking to enhance its defensive capabilities heading into the next season.

Assessing the Impact of Tyus Bowser on Miami’s Defense

Tyus Bowser was recently released by the Baltimore Ravens as a cap casualty in March, allowing the Ravens to save $5.5 million in salary cap space. Unfortunately, Bowser missed the entire last season due to a significant knee injury and has only appeared in nine games since the start of the 2022 season. Despite these setbacks, his prior performance and experience could make him a valuable asset for Miami.

Drafted in 2017 as a second-round pick, Bowser played in at least 15 games for five consecutive seasons at the beginning of his career. He achieved a career-high of eight sacks along with 25 quarterback pressures in the 2021 season, showcasing his potential impact on the field when healthy. Miami could benefit greatly from Bowser’s skills if he can regain his previous form.

Furthermore, Bowser has a prior relationship with defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, which could facilitate his integration into Miami’s defensive scheme. Given Bowser’s documented ability to consistently pressure quarterbacks, the Dolphins could find that his experience outweighs any lingering injury concerns.

Exploring Melvin Ingram’s Potential Return to Miami

Melvin Ingram, a first-round pick in 2012 by the San Diego Chargers, has played in 20 games for the Miami Dolphins over the past two seasons. Last year, he made a surprising impact by recording six sacks, while he added 1.5 sacks in three games during the previous season. His performance demonstrates his ability to contribute effectively to the team’s pass rush.
