F1 Bahrain Grand Prix 2023 date: UK start time, qualification, live stream and how to watch season opener – Max Verstappen wary of Lewis Hamilton threat as he begins world title defence

The new Formula One season is finally speeding back onto the sporting calendar with the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix coming up next month.

Max Verstappen is bidding to become only the fourth driver ever to win three driver’s championships following his domination of the entire grid last campaign.

Lewis Hamilton is currently in the illustrious three-peat club and will be bidding to stop the Dutchman after suffering one of the worst season’s of his career.

The seven-time world champion failed to win a single Grand Prix in 2022 – his only year without one – and had to settle for sixth as Verstappen won a record 15 races en route to the title and Red Bull beat out Mercedes to claim constructors glory.

Yet Verstappen himself believes the Brit could return to a title battle if the Silver Arrows have solved their issues from last term.

Asked if Hamilton was still a dangerous threat, the 25-year-old replied: “Of course he is. He’s one of the greatest drivers ever in the sport.

“If he has the car to do it, he can fight for the title again. It’s the same for George [Russell], for Charles [Leclerc], it’s the same for Lando [Norris].

“If you give them a car that’s capable of winning a championship, they can.”

Bahrain Grand Prix: What has been said?

Verstappen has said he has ‘no issues’ with rival Hamilton after their much publicised showdowns in the 2021 title race.

Hamilton was recently asked about their relationship and said ‘I respect him’, adding: “Maybe he has a problem with me. But I am not sure about that and I actually assume not.”

The two were pictured together at Sebastian Vettel’s farewell dinner at the end of last season, which Verstappen referenced in his reply.

“I have no issues with anyone,” Verstappen said.

“We had that dinner in Abu Dhabi, we had a laugh with everyone, we all had a good time so that’s OK.”
