Four records Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal could break tonight vs Royal Antwerp

It has been a dream start to the 2023/24 season for Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal.

The 16-year-old attacking prodigy made his first-team breakthrough towards the end of the last season and while it was expected that he would have more prominence in the senior setup this season, not many envisaged this sort of breakout for him.

Indeed, in just five matches this season, Yamal has already shown that he belongs at the highest level and is a strong contender for the starting berth on the right flank if not the outright first choice.

Over the past five months or so, the teenage sensation has broken some records at the club level while the recent international break also saw him do so with the Spanish national team as he became La Roja’s youngest debutant, starter, and goalscorer ever.

More records await Yamal

Now as Barcelona get set to face Royal Antwerp in the UEFA Champions League later tonight, Yamal could make several more records to his name if he features against the Belgian champions at the Montjuic Stadium.

If Yamal gets on the pitch against Royal Antwerp tonight, he will become the youngest-ever player to feature for Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League (16y 2m), taking the record away from another La Masia product in Ansu Fati (16y 10m).

Beyond that, Yamal would also become the second-youngest player to play in the Champions League, going past former Anderlecht defender Celestine Babayaro (16y 86d), with only Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko ahead of the Barça prodigy.

If the 16-year-old were to find the back of the net against Mark van Bommel’s side at Montjuic tonight, he would also become the youngest-ever goalscorer in the history of the club as well – a record again held by Ansu Fati.

Yamal would also become the youngest player to score in Champions League history, another accolade that stands in Ansu’s name currently.

Given how Yamal has performed so far this season, one would not put it beyond him to accomplish this in tonight’s match against Royal Antwerp.
