During a press conference on Friday, George Karlaftis, the Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive end, addressed the media with a clear message: the team is facing a significant challenge this weekend against the formidable Buffalo Bills. This matchup is crucial for the Chiefs as they aim to maintain their perfect record.
The game on Sunday is arguably the toughest remaining challenge on the Chiefs’ schedule, representing a pivotal moment in their pursuit of an unprecedented 17-0 record this season. The stakes are high, and both teams are prepared to showcase their best performances on the field.
Karlaftis emphasized the talent spread across the Bills’ roster, particularly praising quarterback Josh Allen, who is once again demonstrating his exceptional skills this year. “They have great players at every position, starting with their quarterback,” said Karlaftis, acknowledging Allen’s impact on the game.
“He’s one of the best quarterbacks in the league… His ability to move around the field, combined with his size, makes him even more formidable. You have to respect that. He’s an elite player who can make every throw and is a threat with his mobility,” Karlaftis elaborated, highlighting Allen’s dual-threat capabilities.
Playing at Highmark Stadium presents its own set of challenges. The environment is known for its intensity, and notably, Kansas City has not secured a regular-season victory in Buffalo since 2020, which adds to the pressure of this upcoming game.
“We’ve had many close contests with them,” Karlaftis remarked, reflecting on their past matchups. “We haven’t won any since I joined the team in the regular season, although we did beat them in the playoffs. This week, we need to elevate our game to a whole new level.”
From a statistical standpoint, Karlaftis’s performance this season has been somewhat underwhelming compared to expectations; he has recorded just four sacks over the first nine games. However, he maintains a positive outlook.
When asked about his stats, he confidently replied, “You don’t focus on the numbers mid-season. Those are for the end of the season. Each week is an opportunity for us to improve and get better. We need to work hard and let the results take care of themselves. I’m not concerned with statistics; I’m focused on our overall performance because we know we have the potential to elevate our game. Our expectations are significantly higher.”
Karlaftis pointed out that the number of sacks can sometimes be misleading when evaluating defensive success. For instance, Chiefs star defensive tackle Chris Jones has only three sacks in the 2024 season but faces more double-teams than any other defensive tackle in the league, highlighting the complexity of assessing performance based solely on sack totals.

Regarding Jones, Karlaftis praised him as the dominant force he has always been. He noted, “His statistics may not reflect his usual dominance from previous years, but I have no doubt they will come. He consistently draws double-teams on nearly every pass play, commanding so much attention on the field. When he has a one-on-one matchup, he’s likely to win it.”
“He’s our leader on the defensive line,” Karlaftis added, underscoring Jones’s importance to the team. His presence not only elevates the play of those around him but also sets the tone for the entire defensive unit.
Aside from his on-field performance, Karlaftis highlighted Jones’s leadership qualities, noting, “His play is undeniable, but his growth as a leader has been remarkable over the past few years. He has become an incredible asset for our team, igniting our defensive front and guiding us all.”
When asked by reporters about Leo Chenal’s crucial block to secure a victory against the Denver Broncos last week, Karlaftis was quick to acknowledge Chenal’s effort. “You watch the tape, and you have to give credit to Leo for that incredible play. Perhaps I could have made a similar effort, but I don’t dwell in hypothetical scenarios. I was in the right position to make a play.”
