HBCU Basketball Players of the Week: Dec. 30-Jan. 6 Highlights

The new year has arrived, yet the incredible performances in the HBCU basketball scene continue to captivate fans and analysts alike.

This week was fiercely competitive, as standout performances from two players were highlighted by a combination of remarkable efficiency and dominant play. These achievements led to their recognition as the HBCU Players of the Week.

Let’s take a closer look at the standout winners.

Men’s Player of the Week: Brian Moore Jr. from Norfolk State

Brian Moore Jr. has been on an impressive trajectory, coming off a season-high performance where he scored 33 points against High Point on December 29. This past week, he continued to showcase his skills with two notable performances, one of which was against a formidable opponent. In a challenging game against the top-ranked Tennessee team, Moore contributed 18 points while shooting an impressive 50.0%. He demonstrated his scoring ability against one of the nation’s top defenses, hitting two out of three attempts from beyond the arc and maintaining a flawless turnover record.

In his next outing during the MEAC opener on Saturday, Moore elevated his game even further, scoring 22 points on just 15 attempts. He also filled the stat sheet with seven rebounds, four assists, four blocks, and three steals. His efforts were pivotal in leading Norfolk State to a confident 81-59 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore, marking a strong start to their defense of the MEAC regular season title.

Moore, HBCU POW

It’s heartening to see that Moore has addressed the turnover issues that had previously hindered his performance. After a stretch of nine games where he committed two or fewer turnovers, he experienced a four-game stretch with at least three turnovers in each match. However, in the four games since that downturn, he has only recorded three turnovers total. When he’s performing at his best, he ranks among the most efficient scorers in the nation, and it’s evident that he has regained that form.

Currently, Moore boasts an impressive shooting percentage of 56.9% for the season, the highest among Division 1 players averaging at least 19 points per game. With his recent stellar performances, especially at the onset of conference play, Moore is undoubtedly peaking at a crucial time for Norfolk State.

Women’s Player of the Week: Cordasia Harris from Alabama State

Although the season started on shaky ground for Alabama State, conference play has provided a fresh opportunity for every team. The Lady Hornets, under the leadership of Cordasia Harris, have seized this chance to turn their fortunes around.

Having entered conference play on a daunting 10-game losing streak, Alabama State has remarkably won their first two league games by impressive margins, showcasing their resilience and potential to create a significant impact in the SWAC. Harris has been central to this turnaround, leading her team in points and rebounds throughout both games.

In a crucial 58-46 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Harris delivered an outstanding performance with 19 points and 13 rebounds, shooting an impressive 8-of-10 from the field. She followed that up with an even more remarkable display against Mississippi Valley State, where she recorded 28 points, 16 rebounds, and five steals, contributing to a solid 64-49 win.

Harris POW

These two games marked Harris’s top performances in terms of scoring and rebounding against Division 1 competition this season. Notably, her five steals against Mississippi Valley State represented a career high, emphasizing her impactful presence on both ends of the court. Harris is clearly elevating her game just as conference play heats up.
