During the lead-up to the NFL Draft, there were discussions suggesting that the Detroit Lions were not close to finalizing a contract extension for quarterback Jared Goff. However, in a recent interview on 97.1 The Ticket, Lions General Manager Brad Holmes emphasized that securing an extension for Goff is a key objective for the team this offseason, and they are optimistic about reaching an agreement soon. This reflects the team’s commitment to building a strong roster and maintaining talented players.
“He’s earned an extension,” Holmes stated. “It’s important, it’s a high priority for us. Both sides are working really, really hard. These things just take time.” Holmes highlighted the significance of Goff’s contributions to the team and reiterated that both parties are dedicated to making this deal happen, despite the complexities often involved in negotiating quarterback contracts.
Just two weeks prior, the Lions secured substantial contract extensions for offensive tackle Penei Sewell and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, locking them in as vital components of the team’s future. Holmes admitted that he had hoped to include Goff in that wave of extensions, but acknowledged the unique challenges that come with negotiating contracts for quarterbacks, which tend to be more intricate due to their higher financial stakes.
“In a perfect world, we would’ve had all three of them done. Bang, bang, bang,” Holmes remarked. “But these things just kind of take a while, especially with the quarterback market, but I do have faith that it’s gonna get done.” This statement underscores the urgency of addressing Goff’s contract while navigating the complexities of the quarterback landscape, which can significantly impact the overall team salary cap.
When asked about the specific challenges associated with negotiating a quarterback’s contract, Holmes did not provide a straightforward answer but did mention the necessity of considering both current and future salary cap implications. This foresight is essential for ensuring the long-term financial health of the team while simultaneously rewarding players who have proven their value on the field.
“There’s some uniqueness there in some different areas, but still, he’s performed at a high level. You look at what the results have been, and we still feel good about where he’s at,” Holmes stated. “He’s not one of the guys that was just recently prepared and all that stuff. But that’s even much better because we even have more of a body of work to take a look at and evaluate.” Holmes emphasized that Goff’s established performance provides a solid foundation for the negotiation process, allowing for a thorough evaluation of his impact on the team.
“All those things, you look at all of it. But, again, we’ve done a lot of work—again, both sides have—we’ve done a lot of work, dialogue’s been consistent. There hasn’t been just dead periods and all that stuff. We’ve been talking, and again, I do have faith through, looking at all the numbers. You gotta think about what can we do now, and what are the impacts on the future, as well. And we look at all of it, because we said all along, when Dan and I first got here, we’re looking to build sustained success, and that’s still the goal.” This commitment to communication and strategic planning reflects the organization’s dedication to fostering a successful team culture.
Goff is entering the final year of his contract, which averages $33.5 million annually, and is projected to cost the Lions $32.3 million against the salary cap—the ninth-highest cap hit among all NFL quarterbacks for the 2024 season. However, recent quarterback contracts have skyrocketed, with figures approaching $55 million per year (e.g., Joe Burrow), and several others earning just below that threshold (e.g., Justin Herbert: $52.5 million, Lamar Jackson: $52 million, and Jalen Hurts: $51 million). This trend highlights the increasing financial demands in the quarterback market and the importance of securing Goff’s future with the team.
While it remains unclear how close Goff and the Lions are to finalizing a contract, it is evident that Detroit is eager to reach an agreement and is confident that it will occur. This determination reflects the organization’s understanding of the value of continuity and stability at the quarterback position, which is crucial for long-term success.
