Jon Runyan’s Free Agency Decision Explained for Giants Fans

Minnesota Vikings News and Links, 12 March 2024

In a recent discussion, New York Giants offensive lineman Jon Runyan Jr. shared valuable insights regarding his decision to join the Giants over the New York Jets during free agency. This choice, driven by various factors, showcases his commitment to the team’s vision and future. Here are the key takeaways from his remarks.

Making the Strategic Choice: Giants vs. Jets

According to ‘Hard Knocks,’ Jon Runyan had a significant decision to make between joining the Jets, where he has strong connections with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, or the Giants during the free agency period.

“I’ve developed a deep relationship with Coach [Nathaniel] Hackett, the offensive coordinator, and I spent three years playing alongside [Jets quarterback] Aaron [Rodgers]. With many former Green Bay players there, I initially felt a sense of comfort with the Jets. They made an enticing offer, and while financial aspects matter, I am genuinely excited about what Joe (Schoen), Brandon [Brown], Dabs [Brian Daboll], and Carm [Carmen Bricillo] are constructing here. The Giants’ offensive lineup is impressively built from the ground up, featuring talented playmakers. I am confident that our offensive line will perform exceptionally well. Ultimately, we need to provide our quarterback the time he requires to execute plays effectively. I believe this is going to be a thrilling journey ahead,” Runyan expressed passionately.

Runyan expressed strong optimism about the future of the Giants.

“I won’t comment on the Jets organization, but it’s evident that they are geared toward immediate success, aiming for a Super Bowl victory this year,” he stated. “However, my faith lies in the Giants’ approach. They are not merely focused on the present; they are strategically positioning themselves for the next four or five years. That vision greatly excites me. I feel genuinely wanted and welcomed here, which has made my experience remarkable,” he concluded.

Finding the Right Position: Left or Right Guard?

Throughout his career, Runyan has adeptly played both right and left guard, but he has been primarily focusing on the right guard position since the Giants’ training camp commenced this spring. He acknowledges the potential need to switch positions in the future but expresses a preference to remain on the right side.

“The challenge of switching sides is quite demanding; transitioning from left to right requires significant adjustments,” Runyan explained. “Establishing cohesion with teammates when flipping positions can be complicated. Your entire body mechanics change, affecting your movements, vision, and coordination. It’s beneficial to remain on one side, allowing for stability in performance. However, I remain open to whatever the coaching staff decides; we’ll see how it unfolds.”

Building Strong Team Chemistry with Offensive Linemen

For Runyan, a primary focus during training camp is fostering strong chemistry with his fellow offensive linemen, which is essential for their collective success on the field.

“Training camp serves as a crucial time for bonding and understanding one another,” Runyan commented. “The long hours—often stretching to 12, 13, or even 14 hours—provide ample opportunities to lighten the mood and discover each teammate’s personality. We have no choice but to collaborate, communicate, and socialize. Our chemistry is developing beautifully; we have a light-hearted group, yet when it’s time to focus, we buckle down and get to work diligently.”

Admiring the Resilience of Jermaine Eluemunor

Veteran offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor showcased incredible perseverance by participating in practice on Thursday and Friday, even engaging in 11-on-11 drills despite suffering from severely bruised ribs after an accidental collision with the formidable 340-pound Dexter Lawrence.

Runyan emphasized that this level of commitment does not go unnoticed by teammates.

“I’m aware Jermaine is dealing with the pain from that injury inflicted by Dexter’s shoulder. It must be excruciating to take such a hit to the ribs, yet he’s out there, demonstrating his desire to contribute,” Runyan remarked. “Transitioning to tackle seems to align with his natural abilities, and he simply wants to be on the field, regardless of position. His determination to play despite his discomfort speaks volumes about his character and commitment to the team. It’s inspiring to see him pushing through the pain, making a positive impact on all of us. Having him back in practice today was fantastic.”
