As the Kansas City Chiefs eagerly anticipate their upcoming playoff match following the NFL’s Wild Card Weekend, intriguing developments regarding the coaching staff have emerged. The Chiefs are currently positioned to make a significant push in the playoffs, but the spotlight is also on their talented defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo, who has attracted attention from several teams looking for head coaches.
On Wednesday, it was reported that both the New York Jets and AFC West adversary Las Vegas Raiders have expressed a desire to interview Spagnuolo for their head coaching vacancies. Additionally, the Jacksonville Jaguars added to the buzz by announcing their interest in him on Thursday, further illustrating Spagnuolo’s growing reputation across the league.
During a recent episode of the Up and Adams Show on FANDUEL TV, Chiefs cornerback Joshua Williams shed light on the reasons behind Spagnuolo’s increasing desirability. His insights reveal the unique qualities that make Spagnuolo an exceptional candidate for a head coaching position.
“I think every morning, Spags has new stuff,” Williams articulated. “He would be a great general – no funny stuff. He is truly a marvel in coaching. He consistently devises various types of pressures and intricate zone drops that effectively confuse quarterbacks. Many teams tend to run a repetitive defense year after year, which is beneficial for perfecting skills. However, in our system, one key advantage is the diverse roles we play. We have corners who blitz, drop to cover half, play man-to-man, and utilize off-man and off-zone techniques. The array of defensive strategies we employ is a significant asset that Coach Spags provides.”

Williams benefited significantly from Spagnuolo’s innovative defensive strategies during the Chiefs’ Week 16 triumph over the Houston Texans. Facing a 27-19 deficit late in the fourth quarter, the Texans found themselves on third-and-11 from their own 25. In a pivotal moment, Williams executed a perfectly timed blitz that resulted in a 12-yard sack of quarterback CJ Stroud, showcasing the effectiveness of Spagnuolo’s game plan.
Following this critical play, the Texans were forced to punt, effectively ending their chances of scoring again in the game. Williams’ performance exemplified the impact of effective coaching and strategic execution during high-pressure moments.
“This was the last drive they ended up going out,” Williams recounted. “The Texans were performing well throughout the game. I learned I would be blitzing when I walked by, and the safety had already given me the call. The challenge was disguising my blitz so that the tackle wouldn’t pick me up and the running back wouldn’t come across.”
“Once I felt like I timed my snap perfectly – and no one rotated over – it was just about finishing the play. A huge shoutout to Spags for dialing it up. He consistently brings the pressure and knows how to call the heat. That sack allowed us to secure the game on defense.”
Of course, Spagnuolo’s expertly crafted defensive plays depend heavily on the players executing them effectively. Williams took the time to commend safety Justin Reid for his leadership and ability to elevate the performance of the younger players surrounding him, showcasing the importance of teamwork in achieving defensive success.
“You talk about his physical attributes,” he said of Reid. “Even his mental capacity – being a Stanford guy, he’s incredibly intelligent. I don’t want to inflate his ego too much, or he might think he’s smarter than me! He truly acts as a second coach on the defense. Along with the motivation he brings, he connects well with the players and especially relates to the younger guys. You see him and Jaden Hicks putting in extra time after practice.”
“He and Bryan Cook are always strategizing and ensuring they’re on the same page. He’s the ultimate glue guy, but he also contributes significantly on the field. He unites the defense and makes impactful plays. With so many talented players around him, I believe that’s why our defense has been performing so well in the latter half of the season.”
