The San Diego Padres are 73-78, but have an ongoing five-game winning streak and have also earned victories in seven of their last ten games.
At long last, the team appears to have woken up.
Unfortunately, it might be too late.
Leading the charge is outfielder Juan Soto, who has been red-hot for a while now (not just the five recent victories).
“Juan Soto has reached base in 22 straight games. In that span: .329/.449/.658, 8 HR, 24 RBI,” MLB stats expert Sarah Langs tweeted.

He is reaching peak form, but the Padres’ road to the postseason is extremely complicated and unlikely.
San Diego is 5.5 games behind the third and last Wild Card spot in the National League, and there are six teams vying for two spots if we are generous enough to include them as candidates.
Not only would they need to go on a historic streak, but they also need multiple teams to lose a lot of games and there are just about a dozen left for every squad.
It’s nice to see them showing some spirit, but realistically speaking, their chances are very, very low.
They will keep fighting anyway, and Soto still has every motivation to put up some huge numbers to help his arbitration case and his upcoming mammoth contract.
For the season, he has a nice .267/.404/.505 line with 32 home runs, 100 RBI, 123 walks, and a .909 OPS.
He is capable of much more, but those numbers are still top-notch.
Still, he wasn’t always consistent, and the 2023 Padres needed a bit more from from him and other stars to achieve their objectives.
