EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — In a significant development for the New York Giants, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux is currently classified as “week-to-week” following a wrist surgery performed on Wednesday morning. This information was disclosed by Giants head coach Brian Daboll during a media briefing, raising concerns about the team’s defensive strategy moving forward.
According to insider Ian Rapoport, Thibodeaux has sustained a fractured scaphoid bone, which is a critical injury for any player, especially for someone in a high-impact position like his. The recovery process could be lengthy, depending on the severity of the fracture and the surgery’s success.
Thibodeaux, who was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, made a substantial impact last season with 11.5 sacks. This season, he has already contributed 2 sacks and 7 quarterback hits, showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. His performance is vital for the Giants’ defensive scheme.
Daboll has refrained from speculating on the timeline for Thibodeaux’s return, indicating that they are taking a cautious approach. “I’m not going to give you a timeline or anything like that,” Daboll stated. “I would just say he’s week to week. I’m encouraged with what I’ve heard, but you never know.” This uncertainty adds to the challenges the Giants face as they prepare for upcoming games.
The potential decision to place Thibodeaux on Injured Reserve (IR), which Daboll mentioned is still under consideration, could mean he would miss at least four games. This would significantly impact the Giants’ defensive lineup and their chances in upcoming matchups.
“Anytime anybody gets injured, you never want to see that,” Daboll said, expressing the team’s concern for Thibodeaux. “But he’ll rehab and do the things he needs to do to be ready to go.” The coaching staff is hopeful for a swift recovery, but they are preparing for any eventuality.
According to Pro Football Focus, Thibodeaux currently ranks 21st among 53 qualifying edge rushers with 10 total rushes, 39th in pass rush pressure rate at 6.1%, and 25th in pass rush win rate at 13.5%. These statistics highlight his importance to the team’s defense and the potential gap his absence could create.
In the event that Thibodeaux is sidelined for an extended period, 2021 second-round pick Azeez Ojulari will be expected to step up significantly. With both Thibodeaux and Brian Burns on the field, Ojulari has primarily played a part-time role. This season, he has recorded one sack and 10 tackles in 114 defensive snaps, but he will need to elevate his game to fill the void.
Ojulari had a promising rookie season with 8 sacks, but injuries have hindered his performance over the past two seasons. However, he has remained healthy so far in 2024, and the team is counting on his contributions during Thibodeaux’s absence.
“Azeez has been good for us,” Daboll stated. “He’ll be important if Kayvon’s not there. Whether it’s Boogie Basham, Pat Johnson, or whoever it may be, we have confidence in the guys.” This indicates the depth of the Giants’ roster and their ability to adapt in challenging situations.
Basham has yet to see action this season, remaining inactive for every game thus far. Johnson, who was recently claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles, participated in one defensive snap last week against Seattle, indicating that the team is exploring all options to bolster their defense.
Additionally, the Giants have outside linebacker Benton Whitley on their practice squad. Whitley was previously waived from the 53-man roster before last Sunday’s game and was subsequently re-signed to the practice squad, illustrating the team’s strategy to maintain depth as they navigate injuries.
Latest Update on Wide Receiver Malik Nabers
Wide receiver Malik Nabers will be limited on the sidelines during Wednesday’s practice as he continues to navigate the concussion protocol. His progress is being closely monitored by the medical staff, and his return to full practice remains uncertain.
Daboll has classified Nabers as “day-to-day,” indicating that his status could change based on how he responds to treatment and rehabilitation. “He’s feeling better,” Daboll stated. “He’s still in the process. He’ll do some things off to the side with the training staff today.” This cautious optimism reflects the team’s commitment to player safety.
“We’ll see how he does after he does some activity out there on the grass today,” Daboll added, emphasizing the importance of monitoring Nabers’ condition closely before making any decisions about his participation in upcoming games.
Comprehensive Injury Updates for the Giants
- Running back Devin Singletary, who missed Sunday’s game against Seattle due to a groin injury, was expected to participate in practice. However, Daboll suggested that Singletary would likely operate in a limited capacity, as the team continues to manage his recovery.
- Guard Greg Van Roten, who delivered an impressive performance against Seattle, will take a veteran day of rest to avoid overexertion. The Giants are cautious with the 34-year-old’s workload to ensure he remains healthy throughout the season.
- Guard Jon Runyan Jr. (illness) is not participating in practice, which could affect the team’s offensive line depth and performance.
- Wide Receiver/Kick Returner Gunner Olszewski, currently on IR with a groin injury, is eligible to return but is not yet ready to begin practicing. “He’s closer, but he’s not there yet,” Daboll stated, indicating ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
- Linebacker Dyontae Johnson (ankle) is also eligible to return from IR but has not started practicing yet. “He’s in pretty good shape right now,” Daboll mentioned. “We’re not gonna do anything with him as of yet. Getting close.”
