In a recent announcement by renowned sports analyst Adam Schefter, the Lions have made a strategic move by signing veteran linebacker Kwon Alexander from the Denver Broncos’ practice squad. This acquisition is aimed at strengthening their defensive lineup, which has faced significant challenges this season due to player injuries.

Kwon Alexander, a fourth-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, has built a commendable ten-year career in the National Football League. His accolades include a notable Pro Bowl selection in 2017, reflecting his high level of performance on the field. Throughout his NFL journey, Alexander has participated in 90 games, recording impressive statistics including 639 tackles (54 of which were for a loss), 13.5 sacks, and 34 passes defended. His experience and achievements make him a valuable addition to the Lions’ roster as they aim to improve their defensive capabilities.

Despite his impressive career, Alexander has faced significant injury challenges that have affected his performance and availability. He suffered a torn Achilles tendon late in the 2020 season, which sidelined him for a considerable period. Furthermore, he dealt with an elbow injury that kept him out for a month in 2021, and he faced another torn Achilles injury in November 2023, this time affecting his other leg. These setbacks highlight the resilience he has shown throughout his career as he strives to return to peak performance.

This season, Alexander has made a commendable comeback by starting in two games for the Denver Broncos, showcasing his abilities on the field. Notably, he achieved an impressive 92.5 PFF grade during Week 9 against the Baltimore Ravens, indicating his strong performance and contribution to the team despite his injury history. Such performances underline his capability to make a positive impact on the Lions’ defense.

Additionally, Alexander’s prior experience with the coaching staff adds value to his signing. He spent two productive years with the New Orleans Saints from 2020 to 2021, where he developed a strong rapport with the coaching personnel. This familiarity could facilitate a smoother integration into the Lions’ system, allowing him to contribute effectively from the onset.

Standing at 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 227 pounds, Alexander may be on the smaller side compared to other linebackers, but his physical attributes make him a solid replacement for Malcolm Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who suffered a torn ACL during the Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bears, is listed at 5 feet 11 inches and 234 pounds. Alexander’s agility and speed may offer the Lions a different dynamic in their linebacker corps as they adapt to the loss of Rodriguez.

With Alexander joining the linebacking unit, the Lions are looking to fill the gaps left by several injured players. This includes Alex Anzalone, currently on injured reserve with a broken forearm; Jalen Reeves-Maybin, also on IR due to a neck injury; Derrick Barnes, who is out with a knee issue; and Rodriguez. Other players stepping up to fill these crucial roles include Jack Campbell, David Long, Ezekiel Turner, and Trevor Nowaske, all of whom will need to elevate their game to ensure the team’s defensive strategy remains effective.
