What Inspired You to Start Playing Golf at a Young Age?
My journey with golf began during my teenage years while I was at Arsenal, around the age of 17. The club had exclusive playing rights at South Herts Golf Club, known for its beautiful landscape and welcoming atmosphere. The club’s professional, Dai Rees, was a remarkable figure who captained the Ryder Cup five times and participated in the prestigious event nine times in total. He was not only a great golfer but also a passionate Arsenal supporter. In fact, we often enjoyed our pre-match meals at this lovely venue before heading to Highbury for our games.
Reflecting on Your Childhood: What’s Your Earliest Holiday Memory?
Growing up, my brothers were also passionate about football, having played for Queens Park Rangers and Millwall. Our family would travel from Dublin to London during the summer months, especially in late August and early September, to watch them play. Those trips felt like magical holidays filled with excitement, as we cheered for them from the stands and enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of English football.
Which Golf Resorts Have Left a Lasting Impression on You?
Throughout my golfing journey, I’ve had the privilege of visiting numerous stunning golf resorts. However, Quinta Do Lago nestled in the Algarve stands out as a personal favorite. It offers an unparalleled golfing experience with its picturesque landscapes and exceptional amenities. Additionally, Casa De Campo in the Dominican Republic holds a special place in my heart, primarily because all its courses are designed by the legendary Pete Dye. The resort’s signature course, ‘Teeth of the Dog,’ is renowned as the number one course in the Caribbean for good reason. The breathtaking ocean views alongside the challenging holes make it an unforgettable golfing destination.
I’ve had the pleasure of playing there twice, and I eagerly anticipate my next visit to experience its beauty once again.
Design Your Ideal Golfing Trip: Who Would Join Your Holiday Four-Ball?
As the youngest member of my family, I often reflect on my ideal golfing companions. If I could turn back time, I would love to share a round with my late brothers, Frank, Ray, and Pat. Their absence is deeply felt. However, in the present, my perfect golfing partner is my wife, Sarah. We thoroughly enjoy spending quality time on the golf course together, sharing both the challenges and the triumphs of the game.
What Recent Golf Getaway Stands Out in Your Memory?
My most recent golf holiday took me back to Quinta Do Lago, where I enjoyed a fantastic trip with a few friends. We rented a beautiful villa and played on both the South and North courses. Additionally, we had the pleasure of teeing off at Pinheiros Altos, a nearby course where a friend is a member. Each course is meticulously maintained, ensuring a delightful golfing experience, and the overall atmosphere of the area is simply wonderful.
What Golfing Memory Makes You Smile the Most?
One of my most cherished golfing memories was when I shot a five-over-par 77 at the Green Monkey Course located at Sandy Lane in Barbados. I was accompanied by a couple of good Irish friends and my wife, Sarah. As I currently play off a 14 handicap, I’m not sure I’ll be able to replicate that level of performance anytime soon, but the memory of that day brings a smile to my face.
Which UK Golf Course Captivates Your Heart the Most?
When it comes to my favorite golf courses in the UK, I have two that I simply cannot choose between. The Sunningdale Old Course in Berkshire and the Turnberry Alisa Course in Scotland are both incredible in their own right. I had the pleasure of playing Sunningdale in August and then Turnberry in September, and both experiences were nothing short of spectacular. Each course offers a unique charm, making it impossible for me to declare a single favorite.
Where do You Prefer to Stay While Traveling?
When it comes to luxurious holiday hotels, there’s one that truly stands out in my mind: Sandy Lane in Barbados. From the stunning scenery to the exceptional service, everything about this resort is designed to impress. The food is exquisite, and the golf courses are consistently maintained to the highest standards, ensuring an unforgettable stay for any golf enthusiast.
Which City Captures Your Heart and Why?
As a proud native of Dublin, I may be biased, but it will always hold a special place in my heart. However, my years living in Italy while playing for Juventus, Inter Milan, and Ascoli introduced me to the beauty of Rome. It’s been a while since I last visited, but we often discuss returning. Italy is a country we frequently travel to, yet Rome has eluded us for some time now.
What Culinary Delight Do You Look Forward to on Vacation?
My absolute favorite dining experience while on holiday has to be the Sunday brunch at Sandy Lane. This extravagant buffet features an array of culinary delights, including fresh oysters and exceptional seafood. Additionally, I have a special fondness for a charming seaside resort in Italy called Alassio, which attracts visitors from Milan and Turin. The town is renowned for its excellent restaurants, making it impossible to have a bad meal.
What Essential Travel Advice Would You Share?
When it comes to travel, my top tip is to always avoid eating while flying. Instead, I prefer to enjoy a nice meal either before departure or shortly after landing. I’ve also discovered that a couple of hours of sleep upon returning home helps me combat jet lag and quickly readjust my sleeping pattern.
