SAN FRANCISCO — Mac McClung is letting fans and analysts alike debate his place among the greatest dunkers in basketball history. However, when it comes to the dunk contest, his legacy is undeniably solidified.
The G League sensation and renowned dunk artist delivered an unforgettable performance during NBA All-Star Saturday night, achieving perfect scores of 50 on all four of his astonishing and inventive dunks. This remarkable feat crowned him as the first player ever to secure three consecutive dunk contest victories, a record that speaks volumes about his talent and creativity.
“It kind of feels like a blur,” McClung reflected on the experience. “It’s something I love doing. That’s where my creativity comes from; I genuinely love this contest, and I love to dunk.” His passion for the dunk contest shines through in every leap, showcasing not just athleticism but a deep appreciation for the art of dunking.
Only Nate Robinson stands alongside McClung in the elite club of three-time dunk contest champions, having triumphed in 2006 and then again in 2009-10. This connection to a historical figure in the sport further emphasizes McClung’s extraordinary achievement and his place within the annals of basketball history.
In the thrilling final round, McClung needed to deliver near perfection to outshine San Antonio’s Stephon Castle, who had already impressed the crowd with a score of 49.6 and followed up with a flawless 50 on his second dunk, executing a behind-the-back transition from his right hand to his left before the slam.
McClung met the challenge head-on, achieving as many dunk contest victories as he has played NBA games, according to Sportradar. With only five games under his belt in the NBA, his dunk contest success further highlights his exceptional skills on the court.
For his final dunk, McClung positioned the towering six-foot-11 Evan Mobley on a platform in front of the basket. As Mobley held the ball behind his head, the six-foot-two McClung leaped over him, tapping the rim with the ball before converting it into a thunderous slam that electrified both the crowd and the judges.
His spectacular display even sparked conversations among NBA stars like Ja Morant and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who expressed interest in competing against McClung in future contests, underscoring the excitement and allure he brings to the event.
“I think the contest is a beautiful thing,” McClung shared. “I know people probably want bigger stars in it, and I would love to see that too. However, it’s crucial for those participating to genuinely want to compete. This contest holds a special place in our hearts, and we all love it.” His words reflect his respect for the tradition of the dunk contest and its significance in the basketball community.
In the final round, McClung dazzled the audience with his first dunk, seamlessly catching one ball mid-air for a breathtaking windmill dunk with his right hand, all while slamming another ball stationed near the rim with his left hand. This dual execution showcased his incredible coordination and creativity.
McClung also achieved two perfect scores in the opening round. In one memorable moment, he leaped over a parked car, where a person stood through the sunroof holding a ball. He then executed a reverse, behind-the-head dunk, which left the crowd gasping and earned him a perfect score of 50.
Despite having already secured his spot in the finals, McClung continued to impress with another spectacular dunk, jumping over a participant holding the ball and performing a twisting, no-look dunk. This remarkable display even had baseball legend Barry Bonds leaping out of his seat, resulting in yet another perfect score of 50.
McClung revealed that he dedicated eight or nine months preparing for this contest, and he expressed uncertainty about pursuing a fourth consecutive title. “I never want to say never, but this one took a lot out of me,” he said, indicating the immense effort and commitment required to excel in such a high-stakes competition.
Castle made it to the finals with a series of more traditional dunks, earning a total score of 95, showcasing his own talent and style in the competition.
In the first round, Chicago’s Matas Buzelis and Milwaukee’s Andre Jackson Jr. faced elimination, highlighting the fierce competition and the level of skill present in this exciting event.
