Man United Need More Signings This Summer, Admits Ten Hag

Man United manager Erik ten Hag gives an interview prior to the friendly football match between Man Utd and Rosenborg BK at the Lerkendal Stadium in Trondheim, Norway on July 15, 2024.

Erik ten Hag emphasizes the urgent need for Manchester United to bolster their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window for a competitive season ahead.

Last season, the Red Devils faced numerous injuries to key players, which severely impacted their on-field performance, resulting in an eighth-place finish in the Premier League standings. This situation has highlighted the critical need for squad depth and resilience, as injuries can derail even the most promising campaigns. The club is acutely aware that to improve their performance, they must reinforce their squad with quality additions that can step in when needed.

In their efforts to address these challenges, Manchester United has already taken significant steps by hiring two crucial figures from Arsenal’s backroom team: Gary O’Driscoll as the head of sports medicine and Jordan Reece as the head physio. These appointments are aimed at enhancing player fitness and recovery, which is essential for maintaining peak performance throughout the season.

Additionally, the club has secured the signings of defender Lenny Yoro and forward Joshua Zirkzee for a combined fee of nearly £90 million, signaling their intent to strengthen the squad further. However, Ten Hag insists that more reinforcements are necessary before the start of the 2024/25 campaign if they aspire to compete against the top teams in the league effectively.

“I want the team to be as strong as possible. We’ve already made two excellent acquisitions, so when everyone is fit, we have a squad capable of beating any opponent,” Ten Hag stated. He acknowledged the importance of squad depth, especially after experiencing the impact of injuries last season. “This season will truly be a survival of the fittest,” he stressed to reporters, emphasizing the need for a robust team capable of enduring the rigors of the Premier League.

“We’ve already shown that we can defeat the best teams, not just once but twice. However, our challenge is to achieve this level of performance consistently, and that’s what we need to work towards,” Ten Hag added, reflecting on the team’s potential and the work still required to reach their goals.

Ten Hag has also expressed his confidence in players like Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount, believing they can bounce back from their respective disappointments last season. He remarked, “Rashford can only improve himself. He is capable and has scored numerous goals at a relatively young age, so I am confident he can return to form.”

Regarding Mason Mount, Ten Hag stated, “I don’t judge Mason on last season due to his injuries, but when he is fit, he will be a significant asset to the team. You need different types of players in a squad, and he can operate in various positions, which makes him invaluable. I am certain he will contribute positively to our success.”
