The Miami Marlins were actually very active in the waiver bonanza that has taken over MLB in recent weeks.

However, their waiver position prevented them from making significant additions.

In addition, several players they could have targeted landed elsewhere.

Well, at least they have been lucky enough to avoid a couple of disasters based on the performance of some of these hitters since landing on their new teams via waivers.

“You’ll recall that the Marlins had a chance to claim Harrison Bader and Hunter Renfroe off waivers a few weeks ago. They declined and both went to the Reds instead. Well… Bader (14 G) is slashing .161/.235/.194 (15 wRC+) Renfroe (14 G) is slashing .128/.227/.205 (17 wRC+),” Fish on First tweeted.

Wow.

Hitters aren’t robots that are just placed in a specific situation and will automatically produce their career numbers.

There are many variables that go into the equation: adjusting to a new team, teammates, and a new city so quickly shouldn’t be underestimated.

This might have been the case with Bader and Renfroe.

The Reds even announced this week that they will be designating Renfroe for assignment, meaning he will go through waivers again.

Players are worried about themselves and their families: the kids’ school, leaving behind friends, family, and memories in their former city… there are many things that can affect performance.

Miami is 78-72, still in possession of the third and final spot of the NL Wild Card but tied with the Chicago Cubs.
