Newcastle United Bid Farewell to Star Player Miguel Almiron
Miguel Almiron, a beloved player among Newcastle fans, is officially leaving the club to return to Atlanta United. The transfer deal is reported to be worth around £9.5 million, according to insights from The Guardian journalists Louise Taylor and Jacob Steinberg. Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed this news, indicating that the transfer is effectively finalized, paving the way for Almiron’s return to the MLS.
The only remaining step is the formal announcement, which is anticipated to occur on Friday, coinciding perfectly with the sixth anniversary of Almiron’s arrival in Tyneside, a memorable moment that took place on January 31, 2019.
The Paraguayan international has reached an agreement on personal terms with Atlanta United and is expected to secure a four-and-a-half-year contract, pending completion of a medical examination and the official statements from both clubs involved.
This transfer signifies the conclusion of Almiron’s impactful six-year journey at Newcastle, during which he made 223 appearances and netted 30 goals after joining the Magpies in a transfer deal worth £21 million under the management of Rafa Benitez.
Almiron’s exit follows a challenging season where he fell out of favor with manager Eddie Howe, starting only one Premier League match and often being replaced by the in-form Jacob Murphy. Despite this, it’s essential to recognize Almiron’s contributions, especially during the 2022-23 season, when Newcastle achieved qualification for the prestigious Champions League. Simply put, without Almiron’s efforts, the team might not have secured a European berth.
His final appearance in a Newcastle jersey was during a 3-1 victory against Southampton, where he came off the bench in what seemed like a heartfelt farewell, followed by a proper goodbye after the final whistle—a poignant moment for both him and the fans.
Almiron’s choice to return to Atlanta, where he previously celebrated an MLS Cup victory in 2018, comes after he turned down offers from Charlotte FC and clubs in Saudi Arabia last season. This return is a full-circle moment for him, creating a narrative that resonates well with supporters from both Atlanta United and Newcastle United.
This transfer also promises to provide a financial boost for Newcastle as they continue to navigate the complexities of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, especially as no new transfers are expected during January, as reported.
Thank you for everything, Miggy!
