It seems like every MLB season, something always seems to go wrong for the Los Angeles Angels.
There may not be a more frustrating team in baseball than them.
Each season, they come into the year with expectations of making the playoffs.
But, every season they end with nothing but disappointment.
The club has not made the playoffs since 2014 when they got swept in the ALDS.
The expectations are high for the Angels each year because they have Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout.
Those are arguably the two best players in the American League when healthy.
But, the Angels cannot even remain in contention with them.
According to Codify, Trout and Ohtani headline a long list of players with the highest WAR to not make the postseason.
Highest single-season WAR by guys on non-playoff teams from the last dozen years:
Trout (2012) –> 10.5
Trout (2016) –> 10.5
Ohtani (2023) –> 10.0
Trout (2018) –> 9.9
Harper (2015) –> 9.7
Trout (2015) –> 9.6
Ohtani (2022) –> 9.6
Ohtani (2021) –> 9.0
Trout (2013) –> 8.9 pic.twitter.com/fH2XaV67Cs

As you can see above, the entire list is Trout and Ohtani except for Bryce Harper in 2015.
One of the main reasons why the Angels continue to fail is due to the health of Trout.
He has not played more than 120 games in a season since 2019.
In all of the seasons that Ohtani has been dominant, Trout has been injured.
That is part of the reason why they cannot lead the Angels to the playoffs.
But, the Angels front office has also done a poor job of building around them.
They have made some brutal signings in free agency with the most recent being Anthony Rendon.
The Angels need to do better as an organization if they want to get back to the postseason.
Odds Shows An Impending Win For Shohei Ohtani
