On a thrilling Sunday afternoon at Lambeau Field, the Minnesota Vikings surged ahead with an impressive lead against the Green Bay Packers. It seemed they were on track to secure their fourth consecutive victory to kick off the 2024 NFL season. The atmosphere was electric as fans anticipated a strong finish, but the game’s unpredictable nature kept everyone on edge.
However, this is the Minnesota Vikings we are talking about—known for their dramatic games and unexpected twists.
After establishing a commanding 28-0 lead, the Vikings found themselves clinging to their advantage during a tense second half. Ultimately, they managed to secure a nail-biting 31-29 victory over the Packers, showcasing both resilience and determination at Lambeau Field.
The Vikings wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as they took the opening kickoff and orchestrated a remarkable 73-yard drive in just six plays. The drive concluded with a spectacular 29-yard touchdown pass from Sam Darnold to Jordan Addison, marking Addison’s first reception since the season opener in New York, and giving the Vikings an early 7-0 lead.
The Packers responded with their own offensive push during their initial drive but faced disappointment when kicker Brayden Narveson missed a 37-yard field goal attempt, hitting the right upright. Seizing the opportunity, the Vikings capitalized on the missed chance and quickly extended their lead with another touchdown pass from Darnold. This time, he connected with Josh Oliver for a 2-yard score, bringing the game to 14-0 with just a minute and a half remaining in the first quarter.
This marked Darnold’s fourth consecutive game with multiple touchdown passes, as he entered the week leading the entire league in touchdown passes, solidifying his status as a top quarterback.
The Minnesota Vikings defense made a crucial play by forcing their first turnover of the game. Jordan Love attempted a pass to Christian Watson, but it was intercepted by a diving Kamu Grugier-Hill, giving the Vikings excellent field position as the first quarter came to a close.
The Vikings took full advantage of this turnover when Jordan Addison found the end zone once more. This time, he executed a jet sweep, skillfully maneuvering around the right side of the field and into the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown, increasing the Vikings’ lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter.
The Packers regrouped and positioned themselves for another scoring opportunity, but Narveson faltered once again, pushing a 49-yard field goal attempt wide to the right, keeping the home team scoreless. After a punt from the Vikings, the Packers suffered another turnover, as a pass from Love was tipped and caught by Shaq Griffin, marking his first interception as a Viking and the second interception of the afternoon.
Taking advantage of this turnover, the Vikings only needed one play (following a Minnesota penalty) for Darnold to throw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Justin Jefferson, extending their lead to 28-0 with just over five minutes remaining in the half.
Before the two-minute warning, the Packers turned the ball over on downs, gifting the Vikings possession at their own 34-yard line. The Vikings seemingly had the momentum to head into halftime with a comfortable 28-0 advantage.
However, disaster struck just before halftime when Jalen Nailor, filling in for the injured Brandon Powell on punt returns, muffed a punt. This blunder allowed the Packers to set up shop at the Minnesota 3-yard line. After a play that was ruled not to be a touchdown, Packers coach Matt LaFleur received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for running onto the field. On the next play, the Packers finally got on the scoreboard, with Love connecting with Jayden Reed for a 15-yard touchdown, making the score 28-7 as they headed into the locker room.
The Minnesota defense stepped up again, forcing a three-and-out on the Packers’ first possession of the second half, and it seemed the Vikings were poised to add to their lead. However, Darnold experienced one of his rare missteps of the game, tossing a pass intended for Aaron Jones that was intercepted by Xavier McKinney at the Green Bay 2-yard line. Fortunately, the Vikings’ defense held strong once more, maintaining their three-touchdown lead.
The third quarter concluded without any scoring from either side, but the Packers broke the silence early in the fourth quarter when Love found Dontayvion Wicks for a 6-yard touchdown pass, narrowing Minnesota’s lead to 28-14 with just under 12 minutes left in regulation.
The Vikings’ offense then put themselves in jeopardy again; Darnold was sacked on the ensuing possession and fumbled, with the Packers recovering at the Minnesota 20-yard line. Just two plays later, Love connected with Tucker Kraft for a 13-yard touchdown, showcasing Kraft’s strength as he barreled through several Vikings defenders. This brought the score to 28-20, and Love followed up with a two-point conversion pass to Kraft, narrowing the margin to 28-22 with just over ten minutes remaining.
Minnesota managed to regain a two-score cushion with a 33-yard field goal from rookie Will Reichard, bringing the score to 31-22 with just over six minutes left. However, Love threw his third interception of the day, which was caught by Byron Murphy in the end zone, preventing the Packers from closing the gap further.
Murphy continued to shine on the next possession as well, forcing another turnover by punching the ball out of Kraft’s hands after Love completed a pass. The Vikings recovered the loose ball in Green Bay territory. Minnesota advanced the ball all the way to the Green Bay 4-yard line but faced a critical fourth-and-1 situation, where Jalen Nailor‘s run came up just short.
This left the Packers with just over two minutes remaining, no timeouts, and a long 96-yard field to cover. In a stunning display of urgency, Love orchestrated a rapid drive, finding Wicks for another touchdown, with the extra point bringing the score to 31-29 with less than a minute left.
The Packers attempted an onside kick, but the Vikings managed to recover the football and took a knee to run out the clock, sealing their hard-fought victory and improving their record to 4-0 despite the late-game drama.
Next week, the Vikings will travel across the pond to host the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, promising yet another exciting matchup in the NFL.
