OverDrive: Kevin Weekes discusses the timing for NHL teams to start planning their draft strategies, particularly noting that the Toronto Maple Leafs are showing interest in two defensemen from the Calgary Flames.
Hayes: “With Kevin Weekes, you know you’re getting insider knowledge, especially when it comes to NHL trades. He’s known for breaking significant news and sharing insights that fans and analysts alike eagerly anticipate.
In Toronto, there’s a palpable sense of urgency among the fans, as the new general manager is already under pressure to make strategic moves. People are discussing potential trades and roster adjustments, reflecting a desire for the team to enhance its performance.
O’Neil: “They can’t, Hayes. Like that …”
Hayes: “Well, that’s what I’m asking: is it too early to even think about making significant roster changes?”
Weekes: “Alright, I broke that deal involving (Calen) Addison being traded from Minnesota, right? Then there was the trade concerning Zach Bogosian. These moves are relatively minor, yet they reflect a broader strategy. Minnesota is still managing cap space from past contracts with Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, which complicates their decision-making.
However, is it too early? I just got off the phone with a prominent agent before you called in, and I spoke to two top-level agents earlier today. Is it too soon to explore trade opportunities?
I genuinely don’t think it’s too early. Let me explain why I feel this way. If you’re considering a trade, you need to assess how your team is performing. Everyone involved has to understand their current standing. The challenge arises when you delay making decisions; if you wait too long to pursue a player you want, the price may increase or someone else might outbid you. That’s a critical concern.
Especially regarding the Leafs, it’s clear they need assistance on defense. From my conversations, I know for a fact that the Leafs are among a select group of teams interested in Nikita Zadorov from Calgary. However, Calgary is also in a position where they want to evaluate their own roster; they believe there’s untapped potential in their group, led by Craig Conroy and Jarome Iginla, so they’re taking their time before making any decisions. Zadorov is certainly one of their key assets.
Another potential target is Chris Tanev, who hails from the Toronto area. His tenacity on the ice and willingness to absorb shots makes him a valuable player. As a young player, I admired his style and would have loved to play alongside someone with his determination.
For those closely following the Leafs, Zadorov and Tanev are two names to keep an eye on. Both players have strong ties to the area, and the Leafs clearly need to fortify their blue line. Addressing this need sooner rather than later will be critical for their success moving forward.”
