Ole Gunnar Solskjær wanted Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane before Bundesliga moves

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær has revealed to The Athletic that he wanted to bring Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane to Old Trafford before their moves to the Bundesliga.

Both Bellingham and Haaland have gained further success since their moves to Borussia Dortmund, with Jude Bellingham having a great start to life at Real Madrid this season and Erling Haaland winning the treble with Manchester City in his first campaign.

Kane, who recently moved to the Bundesliga in the summer, has also enjoyed a great start with four goals in four games so far.

When creating his transfer wishlist in 2019, Erling Haaland was top of Solskjær’s list, and he revealed that he eyed him ‘before his Salzburg debut.’

Instead, Haaland was snapped up by Borussia Dortmund in January 2020 for a fee of just €20m and went on to score 86 goals in 89 appearances.

Jude Bellingham was also included in Solskjær’s top five players to sign, however, the English teenager decided against a move to United and chose Dortmund as the club to help progress his career.

“We wanted Jude Bellingham badly, he’s a Man United player, but I respect that he chose Dortmund and that was probably sensible,” said Solskjær.

The Norwegian additionally revealed his desire to sign Harry Kane but explained how the move would have been unrealistic.

“I would have signed Harry Kane every day of the week, and my understanding was that he wanted to come,” said Solskjær.

“Unfortunately, the club didn’t have the budget with the financial constraints from Covid-19, there was no bottomless pit.”

A signing from the Bundesliga was eventually made during his tenure, as winger Jadon Sancho joined from Borussia Dortmund. This move, however, has been far from a success so far, with Sancho currently training individually away from the squad after a disagreement with current manager, Eric Ten Hag.

“Jadon was put up as the number one target for the right-wing by the scouts, and when you look at his talent, I can see why,” said Solskjær.

The former United boss continued: “Unfortunately, it has not worked out. He’s immensely talented and we haven’t seen the best of him. I hope we do but he prefers to play on the left wing, where Marcus Rashford plays.”
