Orioles Should Target Mariners Pitcher for Trade

The Baltimore Orioles faced yet another challenging postseason experience this year, concluding the regular season with a respectable record of 91 wins and 71 losses, securing the second spot in the American League East. Despite their strong performance during the regular season, the team struggled in the playoffs, mirroring the disappointment of the previous year. After winning their division in 2023, they were swiftly eliminated in their first series. This pattern continued in 2024, as they were again swept in the wild-card series by the Kansas City Royals, highlighting the need for improvement in critical moments.

The Orioles have not made any significant acquisitions during the offseason, with their most notable signings being Tyler O’Neill and Gary Sanchez. The departure of Corbin Burnes to free agency has left a void in their pitching rotation, necessitating the acquisition of a new ace to bolster their lineup. MLB Analyst Mike Ferrin has suggested a potential solution to their pitching woes, pointing towards Luis Castillo as a viable candidate for the team to consider.

“Luis Castillo would make a lot of sense for the Orioles,” Ferrin said via MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM.

Luis Castillo began his professional career in 2017 with the Cincinnati Reds and transitioned to the Seattle Mariners in 2022. In the 2024 season with the Mariners, Castillo showcased his skills by starting 30 games, achieving a record of 11 wins and 12 losses, accompanied by a solid 3.64 ERA and recording 175 strikeouts over 175.1 innings pitched. His consistent performance makes him an attractive target for teams looking to strengthen their pitching lineup.

Ferrin has indicated that Castillo could emerge as a trade candidate for the Orioles, especially following the loss of Burnes to the Diamondbacks in free agency. The Orioles possess a wealth of talent within their farm system, which they could leverage as trade assets if they decide to pursue a pitcher of Castillo’s caliber. This strategic move could significantly enhance their competitive edge in the upcoming season.

While the Orioles have enjoyed commendable regular-season performances over the past two years, their playoff results have been disappointing, raising questions about their ability to compete at the highest level. Ferrin believes that the Orioles hold numerous opportunities for improvement as they prepare for the next season. The franchise is poised to make strategic moves that could reshape their roster and elevate their performance, making them a team to watch closely in the future.
