Mikel Arteta expresses optimism about Arsenal’s chances of reaching the Champions League final despite a 1-0 loss to PSG. After the match, Arteta emphasized that his team still holds a significant opportunity to advance to the final stage of the prestigious UEFA Champions League, even after facing a setback against Paris Saint-Germain. The defeat came after a challenging match, where the Gunners faced an early shock when Ousmane Dembele scored just three minutes into the semi-final first leg, putting pressure on Arsenal immediately.
While the Gunners had their moments, including an almost equalizing goal from Mikel Merino, which was unfortunately disallowed for offside after a thorough VAR review, they ultimately couldn’t capitalize on their chances. With every passing minute at Emirates Stadium, it became increasingly clear that Arsenal needed to find a way to overcome the one-goal deficit they now face ahead of their crucial return leg in Paris, scheduled for two weeks from now.
Mikel Arteta shares disappointment following PSG’s narrow victory over Arsenal
“I’m disappointed with the result,” Arteta remarked during his post-match interview with Amazon Prime Video. “We invested so much effort into this match. Initially, we struggled for the first 10-15 minutes to gain momentum and take control. I feel let down that we couldn’t secure at least a draw.” Arteta’s disappointment was palpable, especially considering that Arsenal had prepared meticulously for this encounter against a formidable opponent like PSG.
Despite being well positioned to defend against the opportunity that led to Dembele’s goal, the French winger managed to exploit a gap created by Declan Rice, who was drawn out to double mark Kvicha Kvaratskhelia. “That’s always a risk, and I must give credit to them for their execution,” Arteta explained. “They found a way out of a tricky situation, and despite having seven players positioned defensively, they were clinical with their chance; sometimes, it’s essential to recognize individual talent.”

The north London club had several opportunities to level the score, but they were thwarted by the exceptional performance of PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and the VAR intervention. “Timing was critical, with margins being just millimeters offside,” the Arsenal manager noted. “On several occasions, we had moments like the one with Martinelli in a one-on-one situation; he has executed similar plays successfully before. Trossard also found himself in a one-on-one, but Donnarumma made vital saves. These are the fine margins that define matches at this level.”
Although Thomas Partey was absent due to suspension, Arteta felt that the midfield performed admirably without him. “I think Declan and Mikel were outstanding today,” he stated. “They provided options and created a different threat, allowing us flexibility to adapt our game plan.” Arteta concluded with a note of resilience: “It’s only half-time, and we still have a significant chance to reach the final.”
