Special Teams Player of the Week: Wil Lutz Honored

Minnesota Vikings News and Links, 12 March 2024

In an impressive achievement, kicker Wil Lutz has been recognized as the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for the fifth time in his career and the second time as a member of the Denver Broncos. This accolade highlights his significant contributions to the team and his talent on the field.

This latest recognition stems from his stellar performance, where he scored a total of 14 points during Denver’s decisive 26-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Such a performance not only underscores Lutz’s skill but also his critical role in securing wins for his team.

Lutz successfully converted all four of his field goal attempts while also making both of his extra point attempts. Since becoming a member of the Broncos in 2015, he has delivered an impressive total of four games where he made at least four field goals. This achievement ties him for the second most in the entire NFL during this timeframe, showcasing his consistency and reliability as a kicker.

After being acquired by Denver through a trade last season, Lutz’s prowess was further recognized when he was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for November 2023. This award reflects his exceptional performance and highlights his value to the team during that period.

Lutz stands out as the first Broncos kicker to receive this prestigious award since Brandon McManus was honored as the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week in Week 14 of 2021. His accomplishment is a testament to his hard work and skill set within the highly competitive environment of the NFL.

Joining the ranks of notable Broncos kickers, Lutz now shares this honor with McManus (2020, ’21) and legends such as Matt Prater (2008, ’09, ’11, ’12, ’13) and Jason Elam (1998, ’99, 2003, ’04, ’07, ’08, ’09). He becomes the 20th different player from the Broncos to earn this award since its inception in 1993, illustrating the legacy of excellence in Denver’s kicking game.

Lutz first entered the NFL as a college free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 2016. He later signed with the New Orleans Saints before the start of the regular season that same year. His journey reflects the determination and resilience needed to succeed in professional football.

Since starting his career in the NFL, the Georgia native has consistently ranked among the Top 10 kickers in several critical categories. These include extra points made (2nd, 318), extra points percentage (3rd, 97.2), points scored (4th, 930), and field goals made (T-7th, 204). His impressive statistics are a testament to his skill and reliability as a key contributor to his team’s success.
