Toronto Maple Leafs and William Nylander: NHL Rumors Update

Analyzing William Nylander’s Contract Situation with the Toronto Maple Leafs: Insights from Chris Johnston on The Leaf Report regarding Nylander’s future with the team.

Jonas Seigel: “This is a significant topic to consider, especially looking ahead. I’m curious about your thoughts on this.”

What do you think will happen if, as we approach next summer, the issue of Nylander’s contract remains unresolved?

Johnston: “Let’s pause there. I genuinely don’t see any reason to believe that Nylander won’t secure an extension with the Maple Leafs.

Here’s the crucial insight into this negotiation: the Leafs recognize that he doesn’t want to play for any other team. This is a pivotal factor in the discussions that I believe is often overlooked.”

Seigel: “Do you truly believe that’s the case?”

Johnston: “Absolutely, I believe that sentiment is accurate. I’m not suggesting…”

Seigel: “Did Zach Hyman have any desire to play elsewhere?”

Johnston: “Zach Hyman’s situation was unique because he was focused on maximizing his contract based on his circumstances, which the Leafs couldn’t accommodate.

Seigel: “So, if the Leafs aren’t prepared to offer a competitive salary to retain him, what is the outcome?”

Johnston: “Let’s examine this further. The Maple Leafs are the only team capable of offering him an eight-year contract. The financial terms the Leafs can provide over that span are likely comparable to what another team might offer over seven years.

To illustrate, if the Leafs were to propose $9.5 million on an eight-year deal, that totals $76 million. Conversely, any team interested in signing him for seven years would need to offer him upwards of $10 million per season to match that value, potentially reaching nearly $11 million annually.

Seigel: “Yes, it could be even higher.”

Johnston: “It’s a challenging situation. There are many teams that value William Nylander highly, but I just can’t see any other franchise being able to match what the Leafs can offer on an eight-year deal. Additionally, Nylander has a deep affection for Toronto and a strong desire to remain here. He has no interest in exploring other options.

When you consider all these factors, I believe they will ultimately reach an agreement.”

Seigel: “But what if they’re not willing to offer $9.5 million? Will they?”

Johnston: “This is part of the negotiation process. It’s all about give and take.”

Seigel: “Do you think it could escalate to a situation reminiscent of Stamkos, where negotiations extend all the way to free agency, and he engages with other teams only to decide to return?”

Johnston: “I’m not certain it will reach that point, as Stamkos’s case was quite unique. If I recall correctly, that was back in 2016? It’s uncommon, but it’s still a possibility.

It’s a delicate balancing act. To be fair to William Nylander, he has previously demonstrated a willingness to let negotiations go right up to the deadline, as he did with the deal finalized on December 1st a few years ago when he was a restricted free agent.

His agent, Lewis Gross, is currently navigating a situation with Shane Pinto in Ottawa. Gross was also the agent for Johnny Gaudreau and Nylander. He is known for pushing negotiations to their limits.

However, given that Nylander has expressed a desire to stay, and the organization is equally eager to secure him, I believe that cooler heads will ultimately prevail, and he will continue as a Maple Leaf.

I’m confident enough to say that I would estimate at least a 90% chance that Nylander will still be with the Leafs next season.”

Seigel: “I’m sure Leaf fans will be thrilled to hear that.”

Johnston: “However, the Leafs will need to offer a competitive salary, particularly if he maintains his current performance level. After all, he’s coming off two impressive seasons where he has consistently increased his point totals as an NHL player. If he surpasses those numbers again, I can only imagine where his salary figures will end up.

It makes too much sense for both parties to finalize an agreement, although it may take the entire season to reach one.”
