Sandro Tonali has returned to the San Siro, just months after leaving AC Milan for Newcastle United.
The 23-year-old became the Magpies’ second most expensive signing ever during the summer transfer window, joining from AC Milan for £55million.
But just months after his departure, Tonali is back at the San Siro. The Champions League has pitted the midfielder against his former side, on what is a special night for the Italy international.
Ahead of the game, it was expected that Eddie Howe would pick Tonali in his starting lineup, and that has proven to be the case. Tonali was named in midfield for the game against AC Milan alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff.
Fans of the Rossoneri were shocked to see Tonali leave the club during the summer, having been such a fan favourite there. It was reported before the game that they would give him a good reception on his return, and that is exactly what happened.

AC Milan fans give Sandro Tonali a brilliant reception
According to Sky Italia, Tonali received a ‘great reception’ from the AC Milan fans when he came out for the warmup on Tuesday night.
They state that he was applauded by the fans for a ‘long time’, with the Italian clapping them back.
Sky Italia add that he was the last player to leave the pitch ahead of the game, as the chants and applause continued.

But while Tonali was cheered, the rest of his Newcastle teammates were booed! That is no surprise, they are right to try to make the atmosphere as hostile as possible.
However, it is excellent to hear that Tonali got a good reception from the fans he used to call his own. It is a testament to his character that they applauded him rather than boo following his big money move away.
