The Excitement of NFL Speculation Season — this thrilling period between the draft and training camp — is currently at its peak, generating considerable buzz among fans and analysts alike.
In this context, a panel of esteemed ESPN experts recently evaluated which players and teams could have the most significant impact this upcoming season. Notably, Kansas City Chiefs’ first-round pick, wide receiver Xavier Worthy, has been highlighted multiple times as a standout player to watch.
Draft analyst Matt Miller made a compelling case for Worthy, declaring him as his top candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Matt Miller: Xavier Worthy, WR, Kansas City Chiefs. Having Worthy, the fastest player ever recorded at the combine, paired with reigning Super Bowl MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes makes him the prime contender for Offensive Rookie of the Year in my estimation.
While I appreciate Miller’s perspective, I can’t help but consider the presence of six quarterbacks drafted in the first round. I believe Worthy will indeed have a remarkable season—especially given that Rashee Rice broke the mold as a rookie under head coach Andy Reid. However, historical trends suggest that the top offensive rookie will likely be either Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, or New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.
Personally, I am particularly enthusiastic about Williams, especially in conjunction with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who revitalized the careers of Geno Smith and Drew Lock during their time in Seattle. Alternatively, Maye, under the guidance of offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, who achieved similar success with Joe Flacco in Cleveland, also has immense potential.
Worthy received another mention from senior writer Jason Reid, discussing which team’s draft class could make the biggest impact in 2024.
Jason Reid: Kansas City Chiefs. It’s remarkable that the Chiefs managed to select WR Xavier Worthy at No. 28 overall. They aggressively moved up to acquire a player who clocked a staggering 4.21 seconds in the 40-yard dash — the fastest time ever recorded — and he’s precisely the player quarterback Patrick Mahomes had his sights set on. Furthermore, don’t be surprised if massive offensive lineman Kingsley Suamataia, the 63rd overall pick, earns the starting left tackle position in Week 1.
Reid’s assessment on Suamataia is spot on, as Kansas City is optimistic that he will secure the starting role during training camp. This Chiefs organization has a history of not shying away from starting rookies on the offensive line. However, the author overlooks fourth-round pick Jared Wiley, who is already a strong candidate for Kansas City’s TE3 position, as well as the two Day 3 defensive backs (a strong suit for the staff) and the much-needed depth added to the offensive line with the Day 3 selections.
